Wang Chung - Biography - AOL Music
The London-based new wave group Wang Chung had a handful of hits in the mid-'80s, achieving their greatest popularity in the U.S. Originally called Huang Chung, the band consisted of vocalist/guitarist Jack Hues, bassist Nick Feldman, and drummer Darren Costin.
Huang Chung released their first single, "Isn't It About Time We Were on Television?," in 1980; the record led to a contract with Arista Records.
Wang Chung returned in 1989 with The Warmer Side of Cool, which spent a mere six weeks on the charts, spawning the minor hit, "Praying to a New God." After the relative disappointment of the album, the group quietly stopped touring and recording.

In America to "reintroduce" himself, the Wang Chung of 2000 is primarily Jack Hues, the original blond-haired lead singer, minus Nick Feldman, the original guitarist.
The band opened with "Don't Let Go," and then proceeded to play old Wang Chung favorites, as well as newer material that was excellent, particularly the slow song "Stargazing" which I immediately liked, with Jack candidly speaking between the songs and announcing most of them.
And unlike some of the other bands from the '80's who have either laid low during the '90's or have continued (and who should have packed it in a long time ago) Wang Chung's performance was like a step back in time.

 odonovan: Wang Chung: Self-Idolators?
What Wang Chung is saying is that there is no difference between the epistemological and the metaphysical.
By having fun, by "wang chung." "Wang chung" becomes a verb that is synonymous with celebration, and since the band is named "Wang Chung," then it becomes the epitome of celebration, of connecting with the "feelings" that are the heart of "true" reality.
I would argue the opposite: that Wang Chung -- brutally honest in their grip on language's covalent generative power to conceive meaning and impotence to convey experience -- fall back on the idea of language and music as two modes immanent in what Joyce terms the "ineluctable modality of the visible."

A hybrid of 1980s post-punk pop/rock and new wave, Wang Chung's music was at times somewhat middle of the road (a case in point: the Top Ten hit "Let's Go") but, when at their edgy best, they produced some of the decade's most memorable hits.
With their sleek, mechanical pop-rock, the band racked up a string of platinum albums and Top 40 singles that made them one of the most popular American rock and roll bands of the late '70s and early '80s.
The only other new romantic band to enjoy greater commercial success was Duran Duran, yet Spandau Ballet was there first, scoring three Top Ten hit singles during 1981 with their synthesized dance-pop.

By 1985, the newly realigned band entered a national contest on MTV called “The Basement Tapes.” After winning the first round and finals, The Sharks claimed a record contract with Elektra, $30,000 in gear, a high-budget video director and a shot at the big time.
“To top that off, we were in the middle of filming and a band called Hybrid Ice, which is another band that still does reunions, they drove past in their limousine,” Wettig says with a twinge of awe.
Despite little radio airplay, many personnel changes and a fallout with Elektra, the band continued making records and touring for the better part of a decade.

Depending on your age, you may or may not remember this, but there was a brief pop music advertising fad in the 80's to mention your band's name somewhere during a potential hit song.
Perhaps the most blatant 80's group to try this was Wang Chung, whose "Everybody Have Fun Tonight", near the end, adds vainly "Everybody Wang Chung Tonight!"
The good news for our industry is that most SEOs are growing up and, like this brief time in the 80's, are seeing in advance that what may work temporarily will not work in the long run.
