The railway arrived at Wangaratta in 1873 and, by 1884, the town had around 1400 residents, four churches, three flour mills, a tobacco factory, two breweries, several foundries, a tannery, a hospital and a town hall.
The Wangaratta Museum is situated in the former fire station (1895) in Ford St. It displays local memorabilia and is open Sundays and most public holidays from 2.00 p.m.

Drage's had a museum in Wodonga (across the Murray River from Albury) back in the 1970s, which was then shifted to Wangaratta and later known as "Air World".
After closing many of these were sold or relocated when the museum closed in in 2002, The Air World facility has become home to Precision Aerospace's Pacific Fighters Museum which is currently restoring a number of historic WWII Pacific aircraft.
