First created in 1989 when it was won by Labor, Wanneroo was gained for the Liberal Part by local councillor and former policeman Wayde Smith in 1993.
On the new boundaries, Wanneroo is a substantially smaller and less diverse electorate.

The Wanneroo Shire Council decided to withhold approval for the appointment of Mr O Lloyd-Woods as Chief Fire Control Officer after it had been claimed that he was a district fire-break contractor.
On Monday night 3/02/75 Wanneroo suffered a severe electrical storm causing multiple fires throughout the district, the number of fires highlighted the lack of radio communication, earthmoving equipment had to be used to control the Yanchep fires.
The fire was controlled by the City of Wanneroo until 1600 hrs, the Minister declared a State Emergency and CALM took control of the fire until it was declared safe and extinguished.

It is not known when early settlers started using the name "Wanneroo", but, as early as 1842, a Surveyor recorded "road to Wanneroo" and in 1844, James Dobbins gave his address as Wanneroo.
A government townsite was gazetted as "Wanneru" in August 1907 and it was not until May 1953 that the spelling was amended to "Wanneroo".

It was on October 19, 1939 that the first test transmissions went on the air from the new ABC shortwave station at Wanneroo (won-e-ROO, the first syllable rhymes with Don) in Western Australia, just 64 years ago today.
Then in 1939, another ABC station, 6WN, was transferred from its city location atop the GPO building and installed as a 2 kW unit at Wanneroo.
The equipment was now very old, housing estates were encroaching on the Wanneroo site, and the number of listeners in the outback areas had dwindled due to alternative methods of radio and TV delivery.
