Topic: The Wantsum Channel

Wantsum Channel - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Wantsum Channel is the name given to a now silted-up watercourse in the English county of Kent.
From prehistory until the Middle Ages it separated the island of Thanet at the north eastern edge of Kent from the mainland.
The Channel was emptied into by the River Stour which but was a wide strait fed by the North Sea that was around 2 miles wide during the Roman period.

The Isle of Thanet is an area of northeast Kent, in England, that used to be separated from the mainland by the Wantsum channel.
The first bridge over the channel was built at Sarre in 1485.
However, the channel silted up around the 15th century, and now the so-called isle is only partially separated from the mainland by the minor rivers Wantsum and Stour.

It was left separated from the mainland by what became known as the Wantsum Channel until the deposition of silt from the River Stour and the build up of shingle which was occurring along the coast have now practically joined the Isle to the mainland.
It was Richborough at the Southern end of the Wantsum Channel, Reculver marks the northern end, where the fleet landed and where one of the largest triumphal arches in the empire was subsequently built.
The Romans crossed the Channel from Boulogne and legions with some support from elephants, were sent to conquer different parts of Southern Britain, meeting stiff resistance from tribes under Caractacus and having to fight two major battles to cross both the Medway near Rochester and the Thames, possibly near where the QEII bridge is today.

During the latter years of the Roman occupation the Saxon Shore way was defended by a series of similar fortifications, built along the south-east coast and intended to deter Saxon raiders from Europe.

 MoLAS 2004: annual review
The project was intended to assess what is known of the changing environment and landscape of the Wantsum Channel and former Sandwich Haven and its significance for archaeology, and to identify areas where future geoarchaeological work is needed both on the site itself and in the area of the Wantsum Channel.
Although the area was dry land for much of the Mesolithic, a rising sea level pushed the coastline inland, flooding the river valley that existed between the Isle of Thanet and mainland Kent, to form a sea passage and driving onshore a shingle bank (on which the medieval port of Stonar was later built).
The reconstruction of the evolving landscape at the eastern end of the Wantsum Channel provided the wider context in which to assess the significance of the buried stratigraphy on the site itself (comprising much of the Sandwich Industrial Estate), which lies within the former Sandwich Haven, between the medieval ports of Stonar and Sandwich.
