Mishewal Wappo Tribe of Alexander Valley, California
The group of California Indians known today as Wappo (an Americanization of the Spanish word guapo = brave), are known by this sobriquet given to them because of their resistance to the mission effort and mission military forays into their territory.
From the western boundary to the eastern side the Wappo territory represented an area of perhaps 20 miles in width and approximately 45 to 50 miles in length.
The Wappo have been the subject of study, both linguistic and ethnographic by various scholars and non-scholars since the mission era in California.
