War Office - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The War Office was a former department of the British Government, responsible for the administration of the British Army between the 17th century and 1963, when its functions were transferred to the Ministry of Defence.
The management of the War Office was initially headed by the curiously-named Secretary at War, whose role had originated under King Charles II of England as the secretary to the Commander-in-Chief of the British Army.
The post of Secretary at War was merged with that of the Secretary of State for War in 1855 and was abolished altogether in 1863.

The final album of U2's early period, before the group broadened its sonic palette and lyrical vision, War is a brilliantly conflicted album, sounding martial and majestic while its very purpose is to tear down false idols propped up by politics.
War was U2s first big selling album and provided them with their first major hit singles.
In marked contrast to the invention and powerful new wave tunes of Boy and even parts of October, War sees U2 overreaching themselves with a number of tracks apparently intended to convey a kind of martial importance crumbling under the weight of poor tunes.

In 1942, the United States War Department distributed a handbook to American servicemen that advised them on the peculiarities of the "British, their country, and their ways." Over sixty years later, this newly published reproduction from the rich archives of the Bodleian Library offers a fascinating glimpse into American military preparations for World War II.
The guide was intended to alleviate the culture shock for soldiers taking their first trip to Great Britain, or, for that matter, abroad.
Reproduced in a style reminiscent of the era, Instructions for American Servicemen in Britain is a powerfully evocative war-time memento that offers a unique perspective on the longstanding American-British relationship and reveals amusingly incisive American perceptions of the British character and country.
