Austro-Prussian War - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Austro-Prussian War (also called the Seven Weeks' War or the German Civil War) was a war fought between the Austrian Empire and Prussia in 1866 that resulted in Prussian dominance in Germany.
The Treaty of Prague on August 23, 1866 resulted in the dissolution of the German Confederation, Prussian annexation of Schleswig-Holstein, Hanover, Hesse-Kassel, Nassau, and Frankfurt, and the exclusion of Austria from German affairs.
The war left Prussia dominant in Germany, and German nationalism would compel the remaining independent states to ally with Prussia in the Franco-Prussian War in 1870, and then to accede to the crowning of King Wilhelm as German Emperor.

But the Prussians having studied their allies in the war of 1864 knew the weakness of the Austrian staff and the untrustworthiness of the contingents of some of the Austrian nationalities, and felt fairly confident that against equal numbers they could hold their own.
The occasion for war was engineered entirely by Bismarck; and it is doubtful how far Moltke was in Bismarck's confidence, though as a far-seeing general he took advantage of every opening which the latter's diplomacy secured for him.
Small armies moving freely within a large theatre of war, the occupation of hostile territory as a primary object of operations, the absence of a decision-compelling spirit on either side, the hostile political "view" over-riding the hostile "feeling"all these conditions remind the student of those of 17th and 18th century warfare.

 MSN Encarta - Franco-Prussian War
Franco-Prussian War, war in 1870-1871 lost by France to the German states under the leadership of Prussia.
The event directly precipitating the Franco-Prussian War was the candidacy of Leopold, prince of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen, for the throne of Spain, rendered vacant by the Spanish revolution of 1868.
The Prussian statesman realized that this move would in all probability precipitate war, but he knew that Prussia was prepared, and he counted on the psychological effect of a French declaration of war to rally the south German states to Prussia's cause, thus accomplishing the final phase in the unification of Germany.

The actual pretext found by Bismarck for a war with Austria was a dispute over the administration of Schleswig and Holstein, which Austria and Prussia had seized from Denmark in 1864 and had since held jointly.
The war also saw the first real test of the Prussian needle gun and Krupp's steel breach loading artillery, which thinned the Austrian lines who were still using Napoleonic weaponry and tactics.
The Mexican war of 1865 had been such a disappointment to the French Emperor Napoleon III that French neutrality was won over by a shadowy assurance of some form of compensation from Bismarck when he met the Napoleon at Biarritz.

Overtly fought over control of Schleswig-Holstein, the war brought to a head the rivalry between Otto von Bismarck's vision of a Prussian-dominated Kleindeutschland and the Austrian alternative of a pan-Germanic Grossdeutschland.
In the war, Prussia found itself allied to the Kingdom of Italy, and many of the smaller states of northern Germany, while Austria was allied to most of the middle-sized German states - Saxony, Bavaria, Württemberg, Baden, Hanover, Hesse-Kassel, Hesse-Darmstadt, Nassau, and others.
Prussian élan and the careful planning of Prussian Chief of the General Staff Helmuth von Moltke resulted in a quick Prussian victory, the war being decided in the Battle of Königgrätz (Sadowa) on July 3, only six weeks after the beginning of the war.

The game has six different scenarios for the various war fought by Prussia and Austria in the period 1864-1870, involving also the Danish (in the Schlewig-Holstein scenario of 1864), Italy (with France in 1859, solitaire in 1866) and France (the Franco Prussian War of 1870).
I've tried the introductory scenario and the Danish War scenarios and both of them are at least playable, even if the situation seems at the start not good for the Danish (but the victory conditions are particularly hars for the Austro-Prussian).
The 1866 Italian-Austrian scenario is probably too favorable for the Austrian, but a good Italian player may have his chance to win at least a marginal victory.

When the German War (aka Seven Weeks War) startet in 1866, many people apparently expected this war to be a long slaughter, instead it was a quick, "clean" victory for Prussia that surely has (together with 1870) formed the Prussian/German mind.
So, with as few changes before 1866 as possible, can the german War really be transformed into a seven year long struggle between Prussia (and her smallish allies in Northern Germany) and Austria (plus the four kingdoms and the majority of the German Confederation)?
If the war is longer, France will try to intervene, probably on Austrias side, but with large demands for compensations - which may be so large that the Austrian government simply cannot accept them for fear of their own liberal-national German population.
