War of the Dwarves and Orcs - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The War began when the elderly exiled Dwarven King Thrór, heir of Durin, wandered alone into Moria and was murdered by Azog the Orc in 2790 of the Third Age.
Other effects of the war were that the Orcs of the Misty Mountains virtually disappeared as a threat for Eriador and Wilderland: the goblins of the High Pass near Rivendell were some of the few survivors.
It is probable that without this War and the final slaughter of the Battle of Nanduhirion, the later War of the Ring would have been lost in the north, and the Ring-bearer might never have made it south to Mordor.

Battle of Nanduhirion - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Tolkien's fictional universe of Middle-earth, the Battle of Nanduhirion was the last battle in the War of the Dwarves and Orcs.
The Battle of Nanduhirion, also called the Battle of Azanulbizar after the Khuzdul name, was fought in the year 2799 of the Third Age at the eastern gate of Moria between the Dwarves of all houses, and the Orcs of the Misty Mountains.
The battle initially went against the Dwarves, for the Orcs had the high ground and the greater numbers, and being a cloudy day in winter there was no sun to bother the orcs.

Orcs - The Lord of the Rings Wiki
Orcs are used as soldiers and henchmen by both the greater and lesser villains of The Silmarillion and The Lord of the Rings — Morgoth, Sauron and Saruman.
Moreover, if Orcs were in fact Elves at their core, this could perhaps mean that they were also immortal — a fact which, if true, would seem inconsistent with Tolkien's treatment of Orcs, although the books do not openly confirm or deny it.
The Orc incursion in the northern Shire occurred during the reign of Arassuil as Chieftain of the Dúnedain, and the Orcs led by Golfimbul were but the most western pack of Orcs which had left the Hithaeglir.

Who were the real heroes of Middle-earth?
The war of the Noldor against Morgoth is futile because it was spawned by selfish greed and material obsession, begun by Fëanor and consecrated by a deadly oath.
The War of the Dwarves and Orcs was initiated by an act of cruel murder aimed at Thror whose crime was to (in a state of insanity) wish to revisit his home - Moria.
So it’s relatively safe to say that the War of the Ring is akin to the War of Wrath, one in which those responsible for it in the first place seek pity and forgiveness so that they may overcome the bad roots they have sown and which threaten to destroy them and their world.

 Orcs
In 2793, the war of the Dwarves and Orcs begun, caused by the murder of Thror in 2790 by the Orc-chieftain Azog who had taken over Moria at the command of Sauron.
At the time, the Orcs were growing in numbers again, and in 2994 they destroyed Balin's colony in Moria under the command of the Balrog, and settled there once again.
Some Orcs under his command adopted the language, but the reform was never any success, though it had an influence on the other Orc-languages and all of Sauron's higher officers spoke it regularly.

 Azog - Tolkien Gateway
The average lifespan of an Orc is unknown, but it is conceivable that he was one of those sent to Moria by Sauron in about T.A. He had one son that we know of, Bolg, who succeeded him after his death.
So began the War of the Dwarves and Orcs: the Dwarves hunted Azog, and many battles were fought beneath the earth.
The Dwarves made no attempt to press their advantage, though, because Dáin had glimpsed Durin's Bane during his battle, and warned the Dwarves not to attempt to enter Moria.

But still, the Orcs were now fearsome and were about to be victorious until the Eagles of Hithaeglir (the Misty Mountains) came and joined the battle against the Orcs and their Wargs.
The Elves, Dwarves and Men received also the aid of Beorn, who came in the form of a giant bear, and it was he who killed Bolg, a victorious move because when the goblins saw their leader dead, they started to flee from the battle in fear.

The Dwarves of Ered Luin (the Firebeards and Broadbeams) were also closely associated with Elves and probably interacted with Men in the Second and Third Ages as well as the Shire Hobbits in the Third Age, but they seem to have become relatively few in number after the First Age...
The Dwarves of Ered Luin may have developed the most sophisticated civilization among their kind during the First Age because of their friendship with the Elves of Beleriand, whose civilization was the highest, most advanced culture in Middle-earth.
These Dwarves probably lived in a similar relationship with their neighbors to Khazad-dum's great alliances, but they were few in number and not seriously threatened by Orcs or dragons, so they do not play any roles in the great wars of the Second Age.
