War Of The Worlds (2005) Movie Review
And so it is that in the terrorism-edgy mid-'00s, Steven Spielberg has resurrecteds War of the Worlds – again – and created the greatest alien invasion movie ever.
To that end, War of the Worlds is essentially an extended chase scene, and the massive-scale destruction – toppling cathedrals, smashed airliners, capsizing ferries – is some of the most awesome and convincing in memory.
For all the off-screen attention attracted by Cruise’s bizarre outbursts, the superstar of this movie is Spielberg, who crafts high-pressure suspense and frantic escape sequences that may leave you short of breath.

2005 War of the Worlds - Movie reviews, trailers, clips and stills
War of the Worlds is the first appearance in months by Tom Cruise where we don't have to hear him profess his love for Katie Holmes, jump around on couches, call people "glib" and ridicule Ritalin.
As for the rest of the movie, the acting was tolerable, the character development decent for this type of sci-fi movie and the special effects were of Spielbergian proportions.
Overall, although War of the Worlds does have its flaws including a rather rushed and perhaps not-so-clear ending and in my mind, one major, major flaw at the end of the movie, it is still one hell of a ride and a must-see in a summer that has had an impressive number of must-sees.

"War of the Worlds" is a big, clunky movie containing some sensational sights but lacking the zest and joyous energy we expect from Steven Spielberg.
Three legs are inherently not stable, as the movie demonstrates when one leg of a giant tripod is damaged, and it falls helplessly to the ground.
The tripods are indeed faithful to the original illustrations for H.G. Wells' novel The War of the Worlds, and to the machines described in the historic 1938 Orson Welles radio broadcast.

Review: War of the Worlds (2005)
War of the Worlds, Steven Spielberg's entry into the 2005 summer box office derby, can be used as an argument for the latter scenario.
War of the Worlds may not stand up well to careful inspection and it may not be the smartest science fiction film brought to the screen (although, when considering movies such as the like-themed Independence Day, it's far from the dumbest), but it is an intense, visceral experience.
War of the Worlds is not vintage Spielberg, and it's on the grim side for a summer action blockbuster, but it's worth the time and money invested.

Movie Review | War of the Worlds (2005) Steven Spielberg, Tom Cruise
Such is the Steven Spielberg mega budgeted "War of the Worlds", a film that wants to be gritty and dark, but is nevertheless encumbered by the need to be trendy and "cool".
The movie follows the same narrative thrust as the smaller budgeted (as in, about $200 million dollars smaller, give or take) "H.G. Wells' War of the Worlds".
Stripped of the special effects and world-destroying alien machines, "War of the Worlds" is a simple story of a family of refugees running for their lives.

War of the Worlds (2005) Movie Review - RopeofSilicon.com
War of the Worlds is a Paramount Pictures release directed by Steven Spielberg and was released in theaters on June 29, 2005.
In recent months much of the focus surrounding War of the Worlds has had to do with Tom Cruise, Katie Holmes and Scientology, but most of that will all be forgotten once audiences sit through the first 15 minutes of the film, trust me on this.
In a movie filled with massive special effects Steven Spielberg not only manages to wow audiences, but he also gives the characters enough time to let us into their lives and for the audience to generate a connection.

War of the Worlds review (2005) Cruise, Spielberg - Qwipster's Movie Reviews
Ray decides their best option is to run, and with the kids in tow, they break like mad for a place to survive, only to find that no such place seems to exist.
War of the Worlds may have its flaws, but it is still recommended for the experience, as it does deliver a good amount of mystery, suspense, terror, and intrigue.
While Spielberg clearly has the vision to pull off great things, there is still much about War of the Worlds to suggest he spent much of his time on "auto pilot", relying on old tricks and clichés of his own creation to get him out of the tough spots.

This gives the movie a much more personal feel, one that allows adults to become emotionally invested in the characters although this personalization may be too intense for children.

Steven Spielberg's huge-budget update of "The War of the Worlds," H.G. Wells' seminal alien-invasion novel from 1898, is a problematic blockbuster with one essential saving grace: It's profoundly frightening in a way that few directors have the talent to capture.
In 2005, everyone in the civilized world could easily believe aliens might be watching us.
Apparently so, and in this movie, the aliens return in what appear to be massive lightning storms all over the world, including in the blue-collar neighborhood where Cruise's ex-wife (Miranda Otto) has just dropped off her kids (Fanning and a petulant teenage brother) for a visit with their selfish, irresponsible dad.
