In summer 2002, the chief of naval operations ordered that all U.S. ships fly the First Navy Jack as a sign of national resolve in the war against global terrorism.
Today, throughout America and in combat theaters and scores of other posts abroad, the American flag proclaims the promise of our republic, while upon every sea, the First Navy Jack asserts our vow to protect and defend democracy against terrorism.
The familiar Union Jack, with stars on a blue field, later took the First Navy Jack's place, and for many years, Navy tradition allowed the First Navy Jack to be flown only from the bow of the oldest U.S. ship in operation.
