The VVA Veteran-Veterans Benefits   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
With a new generation of veterans resulting from the global war on terrorism, veterans of the first Gulf War who suffer from undiagnosed or poorly diagnosed illnesses may feel like their issues are being put on the back burner.
Entitlement to benefits for GWI depends on whether the veteran is a “Gulf War veteran,” as defined by VA regulations—served on active duty in the Southwest Asia theater of operations during the Gulf War era (August 2, 1990, through a date as yet undetermined).
Gulf War veterans should seek the help of experienced veterans service representatives to help them present their claims to the VA. Service representatives are familiar with the VA laws and procedures that must be satisfied in order to receive an award of service connection.

Veteran - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A veteran (from Latin vetus, meaning "old") is a person who is experienced in a particular area, and is particularly used in the United States to refer to people in the armed forces.
A veteran is one who has served in the armed forces and has an honorable discharge; a common misconception is that one has either been in combat and/or is retired from active duty to be called a veteran.
Veterans played a central role in the post-World War I instability of Germany, while in the United States the Bonus Army of unemployed veterans was one of the most important protest movements of the Great Depression.

As well, by being flown straight from a war zone to a military hospital in Australia, I was denied that opportunity to unwind on the trip home by sea- the trip that allowed most other men a period in which to come to terms with their experience in the war.
Many then joined veterans organisations where they pay lip service to the dead, ignore the wounded, and mostly go about feathering their own nests on the altar of 'psychological trauma', and spend their days chasing the biggest pensions they can get for themselves.
Veterans can be sceptical about the experiences of others, so I have had to provide enough detail to about myself to offset that.

War-Zone-Related Stress Reactions: What Veterans Need to Know // National Center for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
Traumatic events are of course common in the war zone, but they are common in the civilian world too, so that in addition to war zone experiences, many military personnel will have experienced one or more traumatic events in their civilian lives.
Particularly in close relationships, the emotional numbing and feeling of disconnection that are common after traumatic events may create distress and drive a wedge between the survivor and his or her family or close friends.
Just as the veteran needs to learn about trauma and its effects, people who are important to him or her also need to learn more.
