The evolution of war is at its midpoint, Mr.
But in the grisly mathematics of war, so is months of training for a highly skilled soldier who must be replaced if he or she is killed or severely wounded in battle.
Robots are a crucial part of the Army's effort to rebuild itself as a 21st-century fighting force, and a $127 billion project called Future Combat Systems is the biggest military contract in American history.

Lost in Space: War of the Robots - TV.com
A distinction is drawn between the terms "robot" and "robotoid".
Robots exist in literature that are strictly bound by programming (for example: almost any robot probe), that are bound by programming in specific areas but free to function more or less independent in others (for example: Asimov's Three Law robots, and machines that are entirely free willed (for example: Star Trek's Data).
Robbie the Robot and the Robinson's "B9" were created by Robert Kinoshita, the man behind all the fantastic props from "Forbidden Planet".

A robot was used to remotely look for enemy soldiers thought to be hiding in an agricultural center building March 30th.
In both operations, Packbot operators used the robot to verify there were, in fact, no enemy soldiers in the building or booby traps or mines on the airfield, where the enemy was believed to have conducted “airfield denial operations,” South said.
Robots have been turned over to engineers in the division at the request of the 101st Division commander, said South, who deployed with McGuire and the engineers from Camp Pennsylvania to Iraq for one week to train them in Packbot operations and maintenance.

The Segway can make much tighter turns than four-wheeled robotic vehicles currently used in the military and by researchers, and its high centre of gravity means cameras and sensors can be placed a metre or more above the ground _ a height more suitable for interacting with humans.
The next goal is to teach the robot the rules of the game and get it to communicate with human players.
The robots would navigate and communicate with each other autonomously, but a human would oversee the whole network.

This order falls under the Man Transportable Robotic System Program that is managed by the Naval Surface Warfare Center in Indian Head, MD. Robots will be delivered to Air Force, Army, Marine Corps and Navy EOD units around the world.

Automation & Robotic engineering - Robots in war
Seems to me that war is supposed to be an unpleasent loss of life and material that is so costly and wasteful that all parties involved are obliged to do whatever it takes to end it quickly.
An example of this is a mobile robotic pair developed in partnership with Darpa and SRI where two bots(usually called agents) are thrown out the back of a moving pickup truck.
Since Robot wars would conceivably be bigger and badder than conventional wars, they would therefore be more damaging to the area where the war takes place, not less.

Moreover, with that many dollars chasing (and tempting) researchers in fields like robotics and nanotechnology, the perception is that it's almost impossible to forgo military support and still remain competitive.
