Waranga Basin is an earth dam which was completed in 1915, ten years after construction began.
At the time of construction, the Waranga Basin embankment was described as the largest project of its kind in the world, with an embankment height of 8.8 m and length of 7.0 km.

Waranga Basin (36°33′ 145°06′E) is a reservoir forming part of the Goulburn River irrigation system in Victoria.
The area now covered by the Waranga Basin includes a swamp that was known as Warranga (the aboriginal name) or Gunn's after one of the early pastoralists who established his squatting run, also called Waranga, in the area surrounding the swamp.
At the time of construction, the Waranga Basin embankment was described as the larger project of its sort in the world with an embankment height of 8.8 metres and length of 7 kilometres.

The Victorian Farmers Federation (VFF) has welcomed Goulburn-Murray Water’s decision to increase allocations on the Goulburn system from 7 per cent to 17 per cent by pumping the Waranga basin.
“The VFF is pleased Goulburn-Murray has supported the VFF’s request to pump Waranga, but details of who was paying for the pumping are still not clear,” Mr Anderson said.
“The VFF will continue to negotiate with Government to see they fund the pumping of the Waranga basin and that this not be left to farmers during these difficult times,” Mr Anderson said.

Smoke from the bushfires to the east of Waranga Basin arrived overnight as a light wind went around to the south-east and east.
At about 6.30 am, the sun was blocked out and until 8.30 am when I left to travel the 10 km into Rushworth, the other side of the Basin could be seen.

Waranga Boat Club has cancelled the 2003 Easter Regatta at the Waranga Basin which was scheduled from 18 April (Good Friday) to 21 April (Easter Monday).
The Waranga Boat Club places a high priority on safety, and in coming to a decision on running the Easter Regatta, the club was not prepared to compromise the safety standards adopted by the club.
Many Yacht Clubs and Associations have been coming to Waranga Boat Club each Easter for a number of years to enjoy the camaraderie and facilities at Waranga.

I am writing this letter regarding the proposed pipeline between Waranga Basin, Bendigo and Ballarat and Lake Eppalock, which may assist them with water and use a large amount of our precious liquid.
Our farmers and orchards have not got enough water to keep them going, already the water authorities are talking about putting pumps in the middle of Waranga Basin to keep our dairy and orchards with water supply.
The Waranga to Eppalock pipeline project (Erskine) will be of net benefit to the community if it is operable both directions and sourced from genuine excess.

The Victorian Farmers Federation (VFF) is urging the State Government to support the pumping of the Waranga basin to provide additional water for Goulburn irrigators.
The VFF believe that Goulburn-Murray Water should not have to bear these extra ordinary costs associated with pumping this water as these additional expenses will later have to be re-cooped from farmers.
“The VFF has requested that Government fund the cost of pumping the Waranga basin as a means of assisting farmers during these dry conditions,” Mr Anderson said.

A diversion of the line was necessary when the Waranga Basin was constructed.
