		The literature of the Philippines started with fables and legends of pre-colonial Philippines down to the Mexican (New Spain) and Spanish influences, but there was a pre-hispanical Writing System.
		Classical literature (José Rizal, Pedro Paterno, Jesús Balmori, Huerta, Farolán, Licsi, Lumba, Castillo etc.) and historical documents (national anthem, Constitución Política de Malolos), were written in Spanish, which is no longer an official language.
		Ironically, a greater portion of Spanish literature by native Filipinos was written during the American commonwealth period because the Spanish language was still predominant for the Filipino intellectuals.

		From what i read, Tagalog was choosen because it had the longest literature heritage of all languages of the Philippine islands and that was already widely used during the spanish revolution movement and i think i read that Tagalog was not as diversifed in dialect as the Bisaya languages.
