The hundreds of professors and thousands of students who supported him in the wake of the public outcry are an indication of the degree to which Churchill is the symbol of a much larger problem.
Ward Churchill has a BA and MA in Communications from Sangamon State, an "experimental" school for student radicals in Illinois.
Less well known is the fact that Professor Churchill's academic career and academic oeuvre was built around the theory that the United States is a genocidal nation, worse than Nazi Germany because its genocides began with its settlement and have continued to the present.

Victor Davis Hanson on Ward Churchill National Review Online
How he was hired, promoted, and tenured without a doctorate is a mystery — the equivalent of a high-school teacher credentialed with an AA degree, or a medical doctor operating without an M.D. Ward Churchill proclaimed that he is a Native American of various tribal affiliations; he is not.
And while it is harder for a pale white man to simply declare himself one day fl or Hispanic, fraudulently identifying oneself as a quarter, eighth, or sixteenth American Indian has been a roguish American pastime since the onset of affirmative action.
Even before that, 1950s Hollywood showed how quite a lot of white people like Ward Churchill can indeed pass as Indians, if they grow their hair long, get a beaded headband, and put on some tassels and buckskins.
