The Wards Island Bridge is a pedestrian bridge connecting the East River Housing Project at East 103rd Street in Manhattan to Wards Island.
The clear width of the Manhattan approach ramp is 3.66m and the clear width of the Wards Island approach ramp measures about 3.76m.
The first known bridge to Wards Island (formerly Great Barn Island) was built in 1807 with the money of two private citizens, Philip Milledolar and Bartholomew Ward, to aid their cotton business on the small island.

High lake levels continually damaged island properties and, on January 1, 1956, the City of Toronto transferred responsibility for the Toronto Islands to The Municipality of Metropolitan Toronto (Metro) to be developed as a regional park.
After the islands were transferred from the federal government to the City of Toronto in 1867, Plan D-141 divided the land into lots and allowed cottages, amusement areas and resort hotels to be built.
Ward's Island, actually the east section of the old peninsula, was named after the Ward family who first settled here about 1830.

An island of 235 acres (103 hectares) at the northern end of the East River, it is legally part of Manhattan.
After the island was acquired by the city in 1855 it was used successively for a potter's field, a hospital for destitute immigrants, an auxiliary immigration station, and the City Asylum (an early mental institution).
Ward's Island is connected by a landfill to Randall's Island and is traversed by the Triborough Bridge and the Hell Gate Bridge.

Ward’s Island Park is located on Ward’s Island, a 255-acre landmass lying in the northern end of the East River, between Manhattan and Queens.
Though houses had already been constructed on the island as early as the 17th century, the Wards made settlement on the island more attractive by opening a cotton mill and building the first bridge crossing the East River (connecting the island with Manhattan at 114th Street) in 1807.
However, the project that eventually altered the landscape of Ward’s Island forever was the construction of the Triborough Bridge.

Wards Island was purchased from the Indians in 1637 by the Dutch and sold later as farmland to the eponymous Ward brothers.
In 1930, the Metropolitan Conference on Parks recommended that both Randall's and Wards Islands be cleared of all institutions and used solely for recreational activities.

In a sense, Wards/Randalls Island is a big park with a few large facilities plopped just south of the halfway point, including the Manhattan Psychiatric Center, a wastewater plant, and a firemen's training school.

The Rev. Oliver Chapin served on Roosevelt Island as the Episcopal minister at Coler Memorial Hospital and as Vicar of the Chapel of the Good Shepherd from 1965 until his passing in 1999.
One postcard refers to "Blackwell's Island, New York;" the other, to "Welfare Island, N.Y." The change on April 12, 1921 took place because the old name had become identified with such negatives as crime, corruption and cruel conditions and the new name sounded more benevolent.
The island's first nursing school was at Charity Hospital, in the former Smallpox Hospital.

While it was generally acknowledged that once people went to Ward's island and realized how easy it is to get there and how beautiful the fields are to play on, that they would willingly go.
However, there was a difference of opinion about which divisions would be hardest to convince to give the field a try and how the use of the field should be divided up.
A mailing was approved to all of the players who would potentially be playing on Ward's island explaining its benefits and trying to allay the fears of parents who are concerned about playing there.

The bridge's three branches meet on Randall's Island, where an interchange and two toll plazas sort out traffic flowing in 12 directions and provide access to the island itself.

It's hard to see the familiar NYC landmarks, until you're on the side of the lower part of Wards Island that faces Queens.
And so, S and I wandered around Wards Island a bit, but not before sitting along the water and looking over to Queens and seeing how the churning waters make little flecks of gold light when the sun hits it.
