Large portions (80,000 km²) of Ellesmere Island are covered with glaciers and ice, with Manson Icefield and Sydkap in the south; Prince of Wales Icefield and Agassiz Ice Cap along the central-east side of the island, along with substantial ice cover in Northern Ellesmere Island.
Along the northwest coast of Ellesmere Island are some ice shelves, including the Ward Hunt ice shelf which experienced major breakup during summer 2002.

According to Herbert J. Hunt’s introduction to Lost Illusions, it was Balzac’s idea to present the social and moral history of his times in a series of novels and short stories that would also include his interpretation of life and society as he saw it.
His self-taught basketball skills are phenomenal; his knowledge of Classic Rock from 1966-1975 is encyclopedic and rapidly growing; and his sustained, systematic attack on my book shelf is inspiring.
I told him a little about it and said it was definitely something he should read, but he said he wasn’t quite in the mood for straight nonfiction.

WASHINGTON, Sept. 22 — The largest ice shelf in the Arctic, a solid feature for 3,000 years, has broken up, scientists in the United States and Canada said Monday.
They said the Ward Hunt Ice Shelf, on the north coast of Ellesmere Island in Canada's Nunavut territory, broke into two main parts, themselves cut through with fissures.

The story has the backdrop of the 1998 Quebec ice storm, which is a nice touch as it does add tension as the book reaches it's climax.
The first book to expose the attack submarine's capabilities was Tom Clancy's "The Hunt for Red October", and was most people's (including myself) introduction to the Cat and Mouse game played by both sides throughout the cold war.
After being stranded for two years on the Antarctic ice, the men were able to travel over one thousand miles over two years (and two Antartic winters) with nothing more than their wits and what they were able to salvage from their ship as it was destroyed by ice.

Cancer Ward was similar to, but not as good as, The First Circle.
