Wardell Gray: Mysterious Death of a Tenorman
Gray was born in Oklahoma, making him one of a handful of "western swing" players whose style was characterized by a full and open tone as well as a relaxed but fiercely swinging improvisational style.
Gray, who was looked up to almost as much as Parker, acted as a role model for younger musicians by not using heroin and telling anyone who would listen that drug use was not the way to become a better player.
Wardell Gray was a hit with the group; more than one reviewer commented on his playing as the focal point of the group.

 Wardell Gray Biography : Oldies.com
Gray made some successful recordings with Gordon, among them "The Chase" and "The Hunt", and also composed a number of tunes himself, including "Twisted", which, with lyrics added, became popular with vocalese singers.
Gray's tone was soft and he played light, flowing lines that reflected the influence Lester Young had upon him.
Gray died on 25 May 1955 in circumstances that have never been fully resolved: his body was found in the Nevada Desert, his neck broken.

The commonly accepted story, boosted by the official cause of death report, is that Gray had succumbed to the lure of heroin and either overdosed, resulting in his body being dumped in the desert to keep the Moulin Rouge from being implicated, or that he had been involved in a drug deal that went bad.
While Gray's sermons against drug use to younger musicians and the testimony of many collegues that Gray was a lifelong non-user don't disprove this, they certainly make it seem somewhat unlikely.
Whether Gray somehow provoked a racist individual or group by his mere presence or was in the wrong place at the wrong time, it does not stretch the imagination too much to see how something like this could have happened.

This was never truer that when Gordon and Gray went into the Dial Studio on Thursday June 12, 1947, and recreated some of the heat they generated in the after-hours clubs with the two-sided masterpiece named coincidentally enough 'The Chase'.
Gray’s solos are nothing less than spellbinding (quoting past triumphs like ‘Twisted’;) and Criss illustrates how the all encompassing influence of Bird, in the right hands was a wonderful thing.
As far as Gray's work as a sideman, his sides with Dameron and Navarro are available on a Blue Note collection, and his work with the Benny Goodman band was on CD but is currently out of print (aside from selected compilation cuts).

Wardell Gray could never have read "The White Negro" because the dangers he lived with killed him at 34, less than a year after the Melody Maker interview.
He was not expected to eat in the dining room, however, nor permitted to enter through the main entrance, and he had to room apart from the others in a house in the fl district.

Wardell Gray was a giant of bop tenor playing, improvising lines that combined some of the relaxed flow of Lester Young with the kinetic invention of Charlie Parker.
His tenor duels with Dexter Gordon are the stuff of legend, as is his mysterious death, his body dumped unceremoniously on the outskirts of Las Vegas in 1955.
