It was because of this deceptive relationship between railway stations and their towns that I formed the wrong opinion of Wareham on my first two visits to Dorset.
The first time I came to Wareham I was unaware that the "slight incline" I encountered after leaving the rail station was really a part of a great earthen wall built by the Saxons to fortify their village against Viking raids.
There would be a forty-five minute wait at the station, then I could catch Wilts and Dorset's No. 143 bus on it's way to Swanage.

When the railway reopens through to Wareham (as intended), this line would be extremely helpful, bypassing a busy and dangerous stretch of the A351.
Bicycles are welcome on Chiltern Railways but not on trains arriving at London Marylebone or Birmingham Snow Hill between 07.45 and 10.00 or departing London Marylebone or Birmingham Snow Hill between 16.30 and 19.30 Monday to Friday.
According to the Paignton and Dartmouth Railway, all trains have a converted coach as a guard's van with a capacity of up to 100 bikes, so tricycles and tandems are welcome and booking is never required.

The town has a station on the South Western Main Line railway, and was formerly the junction station for services along the branch line to Swanage, now preserved as the Swanage Railway.
After the Monmouth Rebellion of 1685, Wareham was one of a number of towns in Dorset where Judge Jeffreys held the Bloody Assizes, with traitors being hanged from the town walls.

On 20 May, 1885, the first steam train ran from Swanage to Wareham and Corfe Castle - replacing the horse as the main transport in the area.

As the Ivatt ran round its train of two Maunsell coaches before departing again for Corfe Castle and Wareham, that short footplate ride started off a friendship with Fred that I was to enjoy for almost 40 years.
I first met Fred Norman in about 1964, when I was a six year old, when he invited me on to the footplate of a rarely before seen Ivatt tank by the shunting bell and bufferstop at Swanage station.
The photo was taken in September, 2001, when the Ivatt tank visited the Swanage Railway from the Mid-Hants Railway for the Swanage Railway's steam gala.
