  The Warg
Wargs are similar to typical wolves in appearance, the main exception being in their size and snout area.
Wargs were first recorded during the Wars of the Chosen, whether they were the result of some magical experiment with wolves or whether they were around before then is unknown.
Wargs prefer to live in hilly or mountainous areas, as this allows them to better blend in with their surroundings and gives them better success in hunting.

When he finds a goblin and a Warg prowling about in the woods, for instance, he puts the goblin’s head on a stake and the Warg’s pelt on a tree outside his house as a warning.

In The Hobbit, the Wargs appear twice, once in chasing Bilbo Baggins, Gandalf, and the dwarves just east of the Misty Mountains, and once at the Battle of Five Armies.
Because of the translation fiction this must mean that 'Warg' was not the name for these animals in Westron, but rather a translation of the original term.
In Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings movie trilogy, wargs appear to be more like hyenas or bears rather than wolves, but it should be noted that Tolkien never actually described a warg beyond stating they were demonic wolves.

Battle for Wesnoth :: View topic - Wargs
Other sources believe it is derived from warg-wolf, where "warg" (or later "werg" and "wero") is cognate with Norse "varg" meaning murderer or predator and as "vargulf" means the kind of wolf that slaughters many of a flock or herd but eats only a bit.
This was a serious problem for herders as they had to somehow destroy the individual wolf that had run mad before it destroyed their entire flock or herd.
"Warg" by itself was used in Old English for that specific kind of wolf (see J. Tolkien's novel The Hobbit) and it was used as well for what would now be called a serial killer.
