 Boomtown
Strangely hyped as a Halo beater, or at least the PS2’s answer to Halo, Warhammer 40,000: Fire Warrior is a fun blast for a day or two, but a Halo beater it is not.
Warhammer 40K: Fire Warrior seems to borrow aspects from various games to try and come up with a perfect fusion of gameplay features, but instead ends up as a pretty standard and unoriginal shooter - albeit with a few good features.
I shan’t deny that I had a good few years of collecting Warhammer 40,000 armies, specifically the Eldar, as well as a couple of other Games Workshop titles (who else remembers Necromunda?).

Warhammer 40,000 RPG Campaign - RPGnet Forums
Fire Warrior has a young Tau warrior fighting first the Imperium, then Chaos, which has potential -- the Tau are the first really heroic types I've seen in WH40K.
So I just got Fire Warrior, the latest Warhammer 40k computer game.
Though a Tau game will be more hopeful, much like a game of cthulu where you never actualy face the Outer Things...

 GameSpy Presents: E3 2003 -- Complete Coverage
For those not in the know, Fire Warrior is taken from the popular table-table and pen-and-paper RPG series from Games Workshop known as Warhammer 40,000.
You take on the role of a lone Tau warrior who must try and overcome the overwhelming power struggle between the Imperium and the other reckless forces in the galaxy.
For the most part, Fire Warrior is a straight-up action FPS with all the whistles and bells you'd expect to find in a game such as Halo or Red Faction II.

This changed focus is somewhat reminiscent of Warhammer 40,000: Rites of War, a 1999 PC wargame where you led the Eldar against the Imperium.
More-casual fans, whose main exposure to Warhammer 40,000 comes from playing the Space Hulk tabletop game and its old PlayStation and PC adaptations, might be disappointed at not being able to step into space marine armor.

Last year's Fire Warrior, an FPS developed by Advance Wars: Under Fire outfit Kuju, fell well short of the mark, considering that Warhammer's depth and legacy, in the words of Dowdeswell, is "probably second only to The Lord of the Rings".
Pick the Ork army and you get tons of them, but they're weak.
Probably the world's most famous tabletop game, Warhammer 40K, is about to get the computer attention it deserves thanks to Relic.

Warhammer 40,000: Dawn Of War PC Video Game Review by AceGamez
The Warhammer 40,000 license has seen some hard times; Rites of War and Chaos Gate were both average, verging on disappointing, while Fire Warrior seemed to miss the point entirely in its creation of a first-person shooter.
But what Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War lacks in remarkable predecessors, it more than makes up for within seconds of its eye-candy opening; what looks to be the epic last stand of the Blood Ravens (campaign mode's playable Space Marine chapter) against the Orks with an equally gripping orchestral score.
In the first couple of missions, the captain will graciously aid the player by building on what knowledge they should already have gained from the tutorial, easing them through to the third mission by which more strategic freedom is allowed.

Amazon.com: Fire Warrior (Warhammer 40,000): Books: Simon Spurrier
I consider myself relatively well read in Games Workshop (or Black Library) fiction, and while I've found several warhammer novels in the past to be good reads, I consider Fire Warrior to be a singularly unique offering in Games Workshop's Warhammer 40K universe.
Humans, tau, eldar, and even the savage green-skinned orks are, in essence, all the same: "humanoid" races adrift in a sea of stars trying desperately to carve out a slice of the cosmic pie.
I would have to say that the single bright spot is the insight the novel provides into Tau culture and into the relationship between the Tau and the Imperium.

Fellow Tau warriors are seen hiding behind buttresses, helping you plant explosives, dodging incoming explosions from base turrets, and flailing into the ground in front of you when you accidentally shoot them.
It also seems that the Tau have shared their weapon technologies with Master Chief, as they have two different firing options for each gun, a grenade lobbing extra attack for when you're caught in a firefight and need to reload, and the Tau are only allowed to carry two weapons at once.

While this is being true to Warhammer 40K, it doesn't change the fact that in a shooter you want to play with new toys after a while; going through several levels using the same pea-shooter isn't a lot of fun.
But the Warhammer 40K universe is teeming with creatures, and yet in each mission you'll face the same two or three enemy types from start to finish.
