Mansion House on Kawau Island (5klm off the Warkworth mainland) was built in 1845 for a Captain Ninnis who came from Cornwall UK to Manager the original Copper Mine on the Island.
He also introduced many New Zealand native birds to the island.Grey lived on and off the island until 1888 and in 1906 Kawau was subdivided.The Conservation Dept are now responsible for the land around the Mansion House.
Warkworth is an Historic Riverside Village and much of its history is told in the publication of a Heritage Trail brochure.
