Warp coil - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In the fictional universe of Star Trek, a warp coil is a component of the warp drive.
Warp field coils are asymmetrically placed units that propel the spaceship into warp flight.
Depending on the geometry of the warp field projected around the ship, these coils create a pulsating field when injected with a controlled plasma burst, pushing to the rear of the vessel, propelling the ship forward in a controlled rate.

Warp drive - Memory Alpha   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
It does this by generating warp fields to form a subspace bubble that envelops the starship, distorting the local spacetime continuum and moving the starship at velocities that exceed the speed of light.
The warp plasma is funneled to plasma injectors into a series of field coils, usually located in remote warp nacelles, which generate the desired warp field.
Warp theory continued to advance with the development of the first transwarp drive engines in the mid-2280s, which would have theoretically allowed greater efficiency and higher warp speeds.

At Warp Factors 5-7, the firing frequencies rise from 40 Hz to 50 Hz, and the ini ors remain open for longer periods, 30 ns to 40 ns.
The coils generate an intense, multilayered field that surrounds the starship, and it is the manipulation of the shape of this field that produces the propulsive effect through and beyond the speed of light, c.
The quantum packets of subspace field energy form at approximately 1/3 the distance from the inner surface of the coil to the outer surface, as the verterium cortenide causes changes in the geometry of space at the Planck scale of 3.9 x 10E-33 cm.

Warp fields exceeding a given warp factor, but lacking the energy to cross the threshold to the next higher level, are called fractional warp factors.
Travel at a given fractional warp factor can be significantly faster than travel at the next lower integral warp, but for extended travel, it is often more energy-efficient to simply increase to the next higher integral warp factor.
The key internal elements of the warp engines, the verterium cortenide 947/952 coils, which convert the core energy into the propulsive warp fields, could not be manufactured to flight tolerances in density and shape for the first half of the prototype construction phase.

Journal of Applied Treknology - Faster Than Warp
One impact of his theory was that even with conventional warp drive a part of the warp field would always extend into deeper subspace domains, and this could be indirectly determined by a slight deviation of the warp drive power expenditure from the predicted value at a certain warp factor.
The warp nacelles and Mark IV transwarp coils were assembled at Yoyodyne's Earth orbit facility, along with most part of the warp power generation and distribution system, and transferred to San Francisco Fleet Yards in 2278.
Secondly, a practical limit of nine warp field layers was found, beyond which the efficiency of conventional warp drive, as it was installed on the Excelsior too, would drop below 23% (the already known efficiencies ranging from 97% at Warp 1 to 64% at Warp 8).

 Warp Power
The Warp Principle holds that it is possible to employ a magnatomic field to manipulate the surrounding space/time matrix so as to create an enveloping bubble or cocoon of sub-space distorting the surrounding volume of space/time and allowing a starship to travel faster than light.
Once the coils reach stage one saturation the warp field is formed and energy is diverted to the Primary Stage Magnatomic Fluxation Chamber, which warps the space/time matrix ahead of the ship, drawing it into the warp field.
In the new coils the dielectric core elements are wrapped with an inner layer of tungsten-cobalt-magnesium, and an outer layer of verterium cortenide.

All warp field effects are created via the use of superconducting Cochrane coils, which are wound according to the complex topological patterns defined by Impulsor Calculus, the branch of mathematics developed by Zephram Cochrane to express the new kinematics and mechanics resulting from his successful unification of gravity with the electro-strong-weak force of quantum physics.
The warp effect itself derives from Cochrane's advanced concepts of gravitation under which the interaction between the mass of a physical body and the surrounding space/time matrix defines a complex mathematical field known as a continuum profile.

The unit of power between whole warp factors for a given vessel is one "Impulse", as in the ST:TNG episode "Conspiracy" when Geordi answers Riker's command to increase from Warp 5 to Warp 6 by acknowledging the addition of yet another full impulse to the power already coursing through the warp nacelles.
A vessel in the warp field travelling at superluminal velocities experiences a tunnel-like effect in which the dark region consists of circles in front of and behind the vessel, and its view of the universe is projected onto a cylindrical tube which the ship appears to travel through.
Students of warp physics correctly identifying the occasion are eligible to win a scholarship to StarFleet academy, which, alas, may not be used until the 23rd century.

Warp 10 is identified clearly as infinite speed, but the pesky Warp 10 barrier is mentioned.
It's then more efficient for ships to align their warp drives with the plane of the galaxy, so flying "up" and "down" in the galactic plane (which is relatively thin, about 1/10th to 1/40th the diameter of the galaxy) would take more energy.

Warp drive systems used by Star Fleet starships employ the controlled annihilation of matter and anti-matter, regulated by the dilithium crystals, to generate the tremendous power required to warp space and travel faster than light.
The warp coils have to be sustained with the massive amount of plasma, otherwise the field is lost and the ship drifts off course.
The matter stream is then fed into the pattern buffer, piped through waveguide conduits to one of the beam emitters on the hull of the starship, and then relayed to a point on the ground where the ACB reconstructs the subject.

The combination of a tractor beam, impulse drive, and warp drive would be very strange, and many explanations come to mind, such as the warp field causing the tractor effect to "slip" away, while the impulse provides propulsion, or the impulse fighting the tractor beam intertially while the warp drive provides propulsion, etc.

The front end of the warp field is located a few kilometers in front of the ship, mere nanometers from the point of fission the slipstream initiator creates.
The transition from warp to slipstream (and vice versa) involves a physical realignment of the subspace coils inside the warp nacelles to create the differently-shaped subspace fields, and also a reconfiguring of the navigational deflector array for slipstream entry and transit, or for clearing microscopic interstellar debris at warp.
At this point the warp drive takes over and continues powering the ship at maximum warp for another 3.5 minutes when the slipstream drive begins activating again, with the slipstream's warp field again reinforced by the warp drive's field during the powering up process.
