Topic: Warr guitar

Warr guitar - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Warr guitar (or tap guitar) is a musical instrument developed by Mark Warr that looks very much like a standard electric guitar, but can be played with "touch-style" techniques, like a Chapman Stick, as well as strummed and plucked.
Traditional bass guitar techniques, such as slap and pop, pizzicato and playing with a plectrum (pick) may also be used.
One of the most well known players of a Warr Guitar is Trey Gunn, formerly of King Crimson.

 Touch Style
With multiple strings covering the musical range of a bass and guitar, using 8, 10, 12 or more strings, the right hand, usually relegated to plucking the string, is now free to depress even more strings, covering even more chordal work or producing counter melodies and matching the parts played by the left.
When you are using the Stick or the Warr guitar, you have that bass string in the middle of the neck of the instrument…and usually I find that that bass string can feed into the melody pickup.
One of the chief complaints with the 5 string and 6 string bass is that the bottom string tends to ‘flap’, often producing an inarticulate note without a lot of power behind the amplification.

Introduction to Tapping   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-01)
However, I have chosen to use the generic term "tap guitar" to illustrate the fact that all these instruments have strings and frets, use electric amplification and generally look and feel like a guitar, though in some cases the body is very small or does not exist at all.
On a tap guitar the string tension is so low (due to the long scale length) that the strings start to vibrate merely from the energy of pushing down on the string.
Spanish tap guitarist Jesús Auñón plays on a standard PRS electric guitar, with all strings tuned a whole step lower (going a half step further than Jimi Hendrix, though of course he didn't tap as far as I know, or at least tapping wasn't central to his technique).

UofD - Interview with Adam Levin of Dark Aether Project
Their style of music was relatively new to me, as was the Warr guitar, so I spent about 90% of the show watching what Adam Levin was doing.
It's tuned mostly in fifths ("mostly" because the interval between the 2nd and 3rd string is a minor 3rd and the interval between the 1st and 2nd string is a major 2nd - these smaller intervals are due to string tension issues).
Steve: Still...there will be people who hear your efforts on the Warr guitar, and the efforts of other Warr guitar greats, and become inspired to the point where they incorporate that instrument into their own musical repertoire.

His mastery of the nine- and 10-string Warr Guitar has given the band a savory and frostbiting edge for a solid 10 years - a long haul for most anyone aside from the group's sole original member Robert Fripp.
TG: The most obvious difference is the Warr Guitar has a body and the Stick does not have a body.
Essentially, both the Warr guitar and the Chapman Stick are in the family of touch guitars.

Kenney plays the Warr guitar, the union of a five-string bass and a seven-string guitar, and his songs range in subject from marijuana and beer to politics to bizarre ballads about having a kidney stolen while falling in love.
It's built by Mark Warr, hence the name- although it is giant and COULD be used as a weapon the Warr guitar is a custom version of the Chapman Stick (tm), and there are many different configurations and tunings.
Brian Kenney-Fresno is a one-man musical juggernaut – a self-described singer of modern folk tales, urban legends and epics of the absurd, wielding a Warr guitar (the unimaginable combination of a five-string bass and a seven-string guitar) and an orchestra of effects.

 trey gunn: gear
Mark Warr's particular specialty in instrument design is in the use of wood.
One of the main design differences between this instrument and a traditional guitar or bass is how the instrument hangs on the player.
When you wear a Warr Guitar the instrument hangs mostly vertically, but because of the way that it is weighted it can be pulled down into a horizontal position.

It may be played like a guitar, with the strings facing forward with hands coming onto the fretboard from each side, or it can be swung in front of the player with the strings facing them, and both hands tap downward on the fretboard.
The Warr Guitar is a relative of the Stick in that it is designed to be used by tapping the strings.
Probably the most famous Warr Guitar player today is Trey Gunn, sometime guitarist for King Crimson, who has both a Warr Guitar model and a tuning named for him.

The bass and keyboards reign on this track [Adam Levin pointed out later that all instruments except the piano and the opening keyboartd part are on the Warr guitar], in which the guitar plays no role whatsoever.

As opposed to traditional guitar techniques where one hand frets notes and the other is used to pick or pluck the strings, with touchstyle one creates sounds by merely tapping the strings on the fretboard.
In 1998 Adam switched to 8 string touch guitars custom built for him by Mark Warr of Warr Guitars which allow him access to a wider range of sounds and techniques.
