The Warrego River is situated in south west Queensland and north west New South Wales, Australia.
The river runs basically north south, from the source in the Carnarvon Ranges through to its junction with the Darling River, downstream from Bourke.
Warrego is an Aboriginal word meaning "river of sand" [1].

 Flood Warning System for the Warrego River
The Warrego River catchment is located in south west Queensland and north west New South Wales and covers an area of approximately 65,000 square kilometres.
Historical flood heights for all river stations in the Warrego River Floodwarning network, as shown on the map, are available from the Bureau of Meteorology upon request.
At each flood warning river height station, the severity of flooding is described as minor, moderate or major according to the effects caused in the local area or in nearby downstream areas.

 HMAS Warrego (1912-1928)
HMAS Warrego was built in Scotland and then dismantled and shipped to Sydney where she was reconstructed at the Cockatoo Island shipyard to provide it with construction experience.
Warrego led the Australian destroyer force into Port Jackson as part of the ceremonial entry of the Australian Fleet Unit on 4 October 1913.
Warrego returned to Australia in February 1915 and was employed on patrol work locally and in Malayan, Philippines and East Indies waters.

HMAS WARREGO was one of six River Class Torpedo Boat Destroyers built for the Royal Australian Navy between 1909 and 1916.
It was during this period, on 24 January 1916, that Commander Cumberlage was appointed in command of the cruiser ENCOUNTER and Lieutenant Commander W.H.F. Warren assumed command of the Destroyer Flotilla.
WARREGO continued to be employed on anti-submarine and escort duties until the end of hostilities in November 1918.

The Darling is the longest river in Australia, measuring 2,740 km from its source to its confluence with the Murray at Wentworth.
The longest continuous stretch of river is from the source of the Condamine, about 100 km south-west of Brisbane, to the mouth of the Murray, less than 100 kilometres south-east of Adelaide, a distance of approximately 3,750 km.
It is perhaps not surprising that the name of the Warrego river in the north-west of the MD basin means "river of sand".

The town of Cunnamulla, which the largest of the four towns in the Paroo Shire, is situated on the banks of the Warrego River and is the southern starting point on the Matilda Highway, a highway that travels through Outback Queensland and connects New South Wales to the Gulf country in far north Queensland.
The rich plains and river flats were ideal for sheep and cattle grazing and these primary industries played a key role in the growth of the town.
The Warrego River occasionally poses a threat to the town, especially when large and prolonged rainfall occurs in the catchment.

 Bourke
On the banks of the Darling River almost 800km north-west of Sydney, the once thriving river port of Bourke was the highest town on the Darling from which barges filled with cargos of wool could be shipped downstream.
Although surrounded by dry plains the town is surprisingly green owing to the irrigation for citrus orchards and cotton crops.
Bourke was a bustling river port from the 1860s to the 1930s, and there are some fine examples of riverboat-era architecture, including the huge reconstructed wharf which can be explored – from here a track winds along the magnificent, tree-lined river.

Along the way, the Paroo River fills a floodplain of more than 780,000 ha which, with the Warrego River floodplain of a similar size, remain the most extensive floodplains of any catchment in the Murray-Darling Basin.
Recognition of the Paroo River’s status as the last free-flowing river in the Murray-Darling Basin and its incredible biological diversity holds some hope that we will not follow history’s well-trodden path of declaring another river ripe for water-resource development without acknowledging the inevitable ecological consequences.

The total area of the catchment is 64,375 km² of which 60% is in Queensland. ; The catchments form the headwaters of the Darling River system and include the streams and tributaries of the Macintyre River, Severn Rivers of NSW and QLD, Pike Creek, Dumaresq River, Macintyre Brook, Weir River, Barwon River and the Moonie River.
The Border Rivers Catchment drains the New England Tablelands of northern NSW and southern QLD.  Further down the catchment are open areas of the slopes and riverine plains of the Weir-Macintyre-Dumaresq and upper Barwon River systems.
The Border Rivers Waterwatch program is aimed at building awareness of catchment health issues through education (community/schools) and providing the capacity for on-farm and subcatchment water quality monitoring by landholders.

Probably the most significant difference was the fact that the Bourke region has been occupied by Europeans and their livestock for almost 150 years, and in that time there has been an accelerated and significant change.
The Warrego River flows into the Darling River, and in the early days this was a major transport artery south and east.
Looking at the biota one suspects that this is probably as good as it gets, and the luxuriant growth stands in stark contrast to the more normal state of affairs, that of blowing sand and the fight for survival through searing heat.

I fly the river particularly in a flood to check where the stock are and I enjoy that, particularly in the early morning, it's really lovely with the light.
I head the Lower Warrego Water Users Association and I also head the Tinnenburra Landcare Groups, so the two joined together, and I don't think you can talk about just the river in isolation.
So while I appreciated the river at that particular time, I was just dreading having to row across this really fast river with a kid that was screaming and trying to put a life jacket on him that he didn't want.

Mark O'Brien says the lack of permanent water near the town has restricted the river's use for activities such as fishing.

If you continue west of Charleville, you will reach the Channel Country, which is the south western corner of Queensland where the Queensland border meets the New South Wales, Northern Territory and South Australia borders.
The area is extremely dry, with the Diamantina, Georgina and Hamilton Rivers only wet when water has poured down from North Queensland during the Monsoon season.
