WARREN county was formed in 1796, and named in memory of General JOSEPH WARREN, who fell at Bunker Hill.
Gen. JOSEPH WARREN, in memory of whom this county was named, was a distinguished patriot, and was one of the earliest of those who sealed with their blood the charter of their country's liberties.
Warren was one of the last to leave the entrenchments, and had proceeded from the works but a few steps, when he was struck by a random shot, and instantly expired.

The county is transected by Interstate 65, the William H. Natcher Parkway (formerly Green River Parkway) and by CSX Transportation (formerly Louisville and Nashville Railroad line).
The county's 1994 population was estimated at 83,000; its largest communities include Woodburn (population 300), Smiths Grove (population 800) and Bowling Green, the state's fifth largest city (population 45,500).
From its inception Warren County's residents depended on the Barren River as an avenue for commerce.

Currently, it is believed that the fanshell only reproduces in: the Clinch River, Hancock County, TN and Scott County, VA; the Green River in Edmundson and Hart counties, KY; and the Licking River, in Campbell, Kenton and Pendelton counties, KY. The reasons for the decline of the rough pigtoe's population are not fully understood, however its longevity - up to 50 years - and the sedetary nature of mussels make them especially vulnerable to habitat alerations caused by dam construction, dredging, siltation, and pollution from agricultural and industrial practices.

In 1855 Kentucky's Superintendent of Public Instruction reported to the General Assembly that, on an average, 31% of Warren County's 3,575 white children attended school.
