The Centurion Armoured Recovery Vehicle II An armoured recovery vehicle (ARV) is a type of armoured fighting vehicle used to repair battle-damaged or broken-down armoured vehicles during combat, or to tow them off the battlefield for more extensive repairs.
ARVs are usually built on the basis of a vehicle in the same class as they are supposed to recover----thus, an tank-based ARV is used to recover tanks, while an APC-based one recovers APCs, but not tanks for the simple reason that it does not have the power to do so.
Many of the latter type of ARV had an A-frame or crane to allow the vehicle's crew to perform heavy lifting tasks such as removing the engine from a disabled tank.

Ammunition - Facts, Information, and Encyclopedia Reference article
The use of vehicles in combat made horse mounted cavalry obsolete and meant that those weapons provided to infantry to deal with a horse-borne enemy (quite often the same as that for defeating a man) would have to be replaced by ordnance capable of defeating significant armour protection moving at speed.
Initial anti-tank weapons (being useful against all lesser vehicle threats) allocated to infantry were often upsized small arms (for example the anti-tank rifle and Brownings original 0.50 inch machine gun).
Post-World War II missile technology was applied to the shaped charge and provided infantry with a weapon that could reliably destroy the heaviest main battle tanks at relatively great distances, finally superseding anti-tank artillery and infantry support weapons like the recoiless rifle.
