Religious Movements in the United States (Miller)
The Harmony Society, arriving in 1804, was one of the most prominent of the Pietist groups, a fellowship of fervent believers led by the charismatic George Rapp, who considered himself a latter-day prophet.
Controversy surrounded their practices of community of goods and celibacy, just as it had the similar Shaker practices, and when a substantial group of members left the community in 1832, they accused Rapp of personal greed and lust for power.
Anticultists are rather more diverse in their approach; generally, they hold that “cults” are pathological organizations run by pathological leaders who prey on and manipulate their often-innocent, misguided followers.

Narratology as a cognitive science by David Herman
Specifically, empirical studies indicate that third-person knowledge is not as limited as was once thought, with attributions of mental properties to others being one of the basic strategies by which human beings organize their understanding of the social behavior of their conspecifics.
The system will allow user inputs that are preconditions for the unfolding of the story-e.g., Beowulf's heroic defense of the meadhall against Grendel's predatory attacks requires that the warrior first arrive at Heorot-but it will block choices that would introduce fatal levels of incoherence into the emerging narrative.
A user playing the role of Grendel, for example, could not suddenly opt to become a nonviolent, altruistic supporter of the Danes, on pain of eliminating the conflict that is basic to the narrative and that makes the story tellable in the first place.

Google it and you will find that the best-selling books in America today are the 12 volumes of the left-behind series written by the Christian fundamentalist and religious right warrior, Timothy LaHaye.
These true believers subscribe to a fantastical theology concocted in the 19th century by a couple of immigrant preachers who took disparate passages from the Bible and wove them into a narrative that has captivated the imagination of millions of Americans.
The only Democrat to score 100 percent with the Christian coalition was Senator Zell Miller of Georgia, who recently quoted from the biblical book of Amos on the senate floor: "the days will come, sayeth the Lord God, that I will send a famine in the land." he seemed to be relishing the thought.
