Major Mitchell's party crossed the upper reaches river just south of Grampians in June of 1836 and went on to Portland Bay, however that was the closest point Mitchell came to the mouth of the river.
In 1844, a survey team lead by William Pickering left Port Fairy (then called Belfast) and rowed to Warrnambool and entered the mouth of the river, landing at a point close to the present day location of Proudfoots boathouse.
Their initial survey for the future township was on the Western bank of the river and Pickering subsequent pegged out another site overlooking the Lady bay, about 2 kilometers away.

WARRNAMBOOL'S Middle Island will be closed for one month while a Maremma guard dog protects penguins and birds during their breeding season.
Warrnambool City Council last night approved plans to bring in the dog to protect the island's penguins and shearwater birds from stray dogs and foxes for a trial period of four to eight weeks.
Dogs have been the biggest culprits in killing penguins at the island, dramatically reducing their population from 2000 a few years ago to 29 today, and have been completely banned from the area.

The Warrnambool Grand Prix came into being as a means of supporting the Melbourne to Warrnambool, which has existed since 1895 and today's field of 40 A Grade riders put on a show for the local fans.
Only 18 riders managed to finish the A Grade race with the newly crowned Melbourne to Warrnambool winner, Jonas Ljungblad of Sweden in a disappointing 15th.  Jade Frankel, the president of the Warrnambool Cycling Club, flew the flag for the local riders, by finishing in fifth place.

AS IF the Darren Weir story was not enough of a sensation, the Warrnambool carnival ended yesterday with its own version of siren-gate following a false start in the second last of 28 races over the three days.
Weir was still in the running to win the trainers' bonus and an $89,000 Mercedes-Benz as the horses lined up for the second-last race of the carnival, although the drama of Wednesday's inquiry into stomach tubing endangered his chances of taking home the bonus.
If Weir had won the car, the Warrnambool Racing Club had arranged to make him a presentation but would not have handed over the car until the stewards received results of the tests taken on his winners.
