It was partly through the industry of these men that the areas around Warrnambool and Port Fairy, through to Portland, became extensively settled in the 1840's and 50's.

He had previously built the first Hotel in Warrnambool (1854) The Royal Archer, and was well known for his hospitality and interest in civic affairs.
Financial problems forced the sale of the hotel in 1867 and it was renamed the Victoria Hotel.
