Warship - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
By the middle of the 17th century, warships were carrying increasing numbers of cannon on their broadsides and tactics evolved to bring each ship's firepower to bear in a line of battle.
The armament of warships also changed with the invention of the rotating barbettes and turrets, which allowed the guns to be aimed independently of the direction of the ship and allowed a smaller number of larger guns to be carried.

Ironclad warship - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Ironclad warships, frequently shortened to just ironclads, were wooden ships or ships of composite construction (wooden planking on iron frames) sheathed with thick iron plates for protection against gunfire.
France proceeded to construct 16 ironclad warships, including two more sister ships to La Gloire, and the only two-decked broadside ironclads ever built, the Magenta and the Solferino, which were also the first warships to be equipped with a spur ram.
While the ironclad warship suffered from numerous flaws, the fact that it became the prominent naval weapon of its era and inspired nearly a century of progressively heavier armored warships can be ascribed to its massive advantage over the previous ships of the line in terms of protection.

Ironclad warship - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-08-19)
The first uses of iron for naval protection occurred in the Far East in the 16th century, but the heyday of the ironclad came in the mid-19th century, when ironclads supplanted wooden ships, and then were themselves replaced by ships made of steel.
The first engagement of two ironclad warships was the Battle of Hampton Roads, from March 8-9, 1862.
The ironclad continued to be the dominant style of warship and developed into what is sometimes called the "old" battleship before being replaced by more advanced, far more seaworthy vessels known to history as pre-dreadnoughts.

Although some have argued, falsely, that the warship is no more than a weapons platform, it is perfectly justifiable to see the development of future weapons, sensors and command, control, communications, computers and intelligence systems as a very significant future warship design driver.
The important influence on future warship design of advances in both manufacturing techniques and technologies, along with improvements in the ship design environment resulting from greater use of computer-based databases and graphic tools, also have a bearing on the adoption of innovation.

Ironclad Warships, more commonly referred to by naval historians and buffs as Ironclads, were ships sheathed with thick iron plates for protection.
Though the engagement was inconclusive, the Confederate ironclad CSS Virginia and its Federal counterpart, USS Monitor, became somewhat legendary, and helped to usher in a new age of armored, steam powered warships.
The age of the ironclad officially ended with the birth of the pre-dreadnought; however, its influence continued to be felt until the end of the Second World War, when naval theorists argued that the armored warship had outlived its usefulness.
