Salto sobrius: Tech Note: Warwalking with WiFiFoFum
But when all you want to do is check your e-mail and read a few blogs on the road, warwalking is what you have to do.
Residential areas and back streets are good: railway stations and hotels are generally swamped with wifi you have to pay for.
So I can't do real warwalking with this machine: I'll have to stop at a likely spot, run WiFiFoFum, walk a few blocks, re-start the machine, run WiFiFoFum, and repeat this until I get connected.

Well, although I have heavy restrictions on my wifi network if I saw someone outside my home attempting to log into my network their PDA camera would be taking shots of their inner anal passage.
Walking around with a PDA to scan for non-authorized access points is an extremely haphazard way to try to prevent people setting up their own hotspots.
however, i've warwalked a bit through town (appartment buildings, not in the centre) and i've found a lot more wifi connections (most are open) than i'd have imagined.

For those who don't know what Wardriving is, take a read of this pretty comprehensive FaQ: http://faq.wardrive.net/ It explains virtually every aspect of the activity.
Personally I've been on a few Warwalks through my village and was quite surprised at the amount of networks that are out there, and even more surprised that a high ratio where actually protected (my village is shall we say..
The antennae are pretty powerful by themselves - I can sit in my room on the 2nd floor of a 8-story building and connect to access points that are physically located in buildings across the street, which is actually quite a distance.

As the weather gets nicer in the coming weeks, I’ve been thinking that it could be rather nice to work outside some days, just sitting under a shady tree enjoying the spring breeze.
So, on Friday afternoon, I decided to go warwalking.
You may have already heard of wardriving — driving around with a laptop looking for WiFi access points — but I needed more granularity than that.

 Warchalking and Wardriving: Overview
We are aware of two enthusiasts who use a bicycle in wardriving; one contact in Australia has used a helicopter and - more scarily, at least for people in his flight path - a light plane.
In major urban centres it is arguably easier to engage in 'warwalking', roam the strrets with a PDA running a stumbling utility like MiniStumbler.
Fans have also referred to 'warcabbing' - nothing more elaborate than watching a laptop in the back seat of a taxi.

 Turns of Phrase: Warchalking
The first was the 1980s term war dialling for the way that hackers systematically dialled telephone numbers in search of a modem that might give them network access.
More recent examples include war driving (driving around with a portable computer, looking for unsecured wireless networks) and warwalking (the same idea, but on foot).
In a sign of its vitality, warchalking has already given rise to the parody terms chalkchalking, pubchalking, and blogchalking and it is being seriously suggested that the symbols should also mark legitimate access points.
