During a Washburn county Highway meeting on Monday April 16, WiscDot representative Jeff Emerson announced that a study will be underway to improve all at grade intersections from Haugen to Superior on highway 53.
The concern is crossing movements that have caused many fatal accidents in recent years along this dangerous section of highway 53.

Phipps was a well-established logging center by the early 1880s and a moderately thriving village into the early 20th century – suffering a few name changes in its early history but enjoying the prestige of being the capital city of the Town of Lenroot for many years.
Sawyer was made independant of Ashland County on March 9, 1885, the last Wisconsin county to be so "detached" from another.
The creation of counties before they could be fully organized – thus necessitating a temporary attachment of each to a neighboring county – originated in Michigan Territory in the 1820s and was practiced to the extreme through the rest of the 19th century throughout the Territories and States of Michigan and Wisconsin.

 Cougar Sighting in NW Wisconsin - Topix
I KNOW I saw one a few years ago, it was in the middle of a dark, newly-plowed field, very easy to spot and identify.
Also cougars kill a deer,their real food source for eons, about every 7 to ten days; that is a lot of deer kills for a surviving group of wild cougars in any area.That evidence would be overwhelming.
We had a sighting in Merrill Wisconsin of a cougar inside the city limits,(I also saw one a couple miles -- if that-- from the city limits)...the in city limits sighting was just a couple city blocks from the elementry school.
