I grew up in and around Washington from when it was still in Co. Durham - I left in 1998 through work, visit (my parents) frequently and it's exactly the same as when I left it - apart from all the district numbers are disappearing in favour of 'village' names.
The difference in Chester-le-Street now is that the people that used to be involved in drunken brawls are now greying and their younger siblings and in some cases offspring have taken up the family trade of appearing before the magistrates.
