The median income for a household in the county was $27,112, and the median income for a family was $31,634.

By 1820, some 425 enslaved people were living in Washington County, and ten years later that number had nearly tripled to 1,168, with slaves comprising about 20 percent of the total population.
Because of Missouri's shorter growing season, the work performed by slaves was more diversified, and the small farms of Washington County did not follow a plantation model with an overseer.
In one unusual case, in 1844 Alexander McCreery travelled to Washington County with the plan of bringing the slaves of his deceased mother’s estate across the state line to Illinois, where they would be free.

Palmer, Missouri, was laid out in 1830 and, from 1830 to 1867, was a post office known as "Harmony." The village was located in Harmony township, 15 miles southwest of Potosi.
The Missouri and Pennsylvania Lead Company was located in "Harmony," Missouri, and had mines of lead and other ores and minerals in Washington and Crawford counties.
A Missouri Fur Company account, July 1813, is included as are accounts for general merchandise and staples such as bacon.
