  Washington Navy Yard History
The Washington Navy Yard is the U.S. Navy's oldest shore establishment, in operation since the first decade of the 19th century.
The Washington Navy Yard was established on 2 October 1799, the date the property was transferred to the Navy.
The yard was built under the direction of Benjamin Stoddert, the first Secretary of the Navy, under the supervision of the yard's first commandant, Commodore Thomas Tingey, who would serve in that capacity for 29 years.

Washington Navy Yard (WNY), an active military facility, encompasses 63.3 acres of land in southeastern Washington, D.C. It lies on the Anacostia River in a heavily urbanized area with industrial, commercial, residential, and vacant properties in the immediate vicinity.
Washington, D.C., receives its drinking water from an area of the Potomac River, which is not impacted by the WNY sites, and is far upstream of the city.
The Washington, D.C. Department of Public Health issued an initial fish consumption advisory in 1989 and an updated advisory in 1994 that urges the general public not to eat catfish, carp, or eel and limit consumption of largemouth bass, sunfish, and other fish.

 Washington Navy Yard - Near Southeast DC Revitalization
The Washington Navy Yard was established on October 2, 1799, and is the headquarters of Naval District Washington.
The Navy Yard's Latrobe Gate, at 8th and M; the original gate was built in 1805-06, with the three-story late-Victorian building constructed over and around it completed in 1881.
There's also on page 36 a nice piece about the history of the Navy Yard, mentioning that the Latrobe Gate at 8th and M is celebrating it's bicentennial this year, with a ceremony on the boards for sometime in mid-September.

Richardson, USNR, with a small group of Naval Photographers operating from the Naval Photographic Laboratory in the Navy Department at Washington, DC.
Upon the establishment of the Naval Bureau of Aeronautics in the Navy Department, Washington, DC in 1921, all Aviation Divisions in the Bureau of Navigation were transferred to the then new Bureau of Aeronautics with RADM William A. Moffett, USN, as Chief of the Bureau.

The land for the Washington Navy Yard (WNY) was purchased under an act of 23 July, 1798, with additional lots being purchased in 1801.
The yard was rapidly pieced together again after the departure of the British on 29 August, but it never fully regained the stature it formerly had.
Dahlgren's long attachment to the yard and his role in its development were recognized in 1863 by the naming of the new foundry in his honor and the burial in its wall of the leg lost by his son, Col. Ulric Dahlgren, following the Battle of Gettysburg.
