The Yard boasted one of the earliest steam engines in the United States which was used to manufacture anchors, chains, and steam engines for vessels of war.
Dahlgren's long attachment to the Yard and his role in its development were recognized in 1863 by the naming of the new foundry in his honor and the burial in its wall of the leg lost by his son, Colonel Ulric Dahlgren, following the Battle of Gettysburg.
The first shipboard catapult was tested in the Anacostia River in 1912, and a wind tunnel was completed at the yard in 1916; the gears for the Panama Canal locks were cast at the Yard; and Navy Yard technicians worked on designs for prosthetic hands and molds for artificial eyes and teeth.

Washington Navy Yard (WNY), an active military facility, encompasses 63.3 acres of land in southeastern Washington, D.C. It lies on the Anacostia River in a heavily urbanized area with industrial, commercial, residential, and vacant properties in the immediate vicinity.
WNY is bordered on the north by commercial and vacant commercial properties along M Street, on the east by an abandoned industrial area along 11th Street, on the west by the Southeast Federal Center owned by GSA, and on the south by the Anacostia River (Figures 1 and 2).
WNY lies on terrace deposits and filled areas of the Anacostia River and slopes generally from the northern part of the facility southward to the river.

 Colt Model M Collector's Information Navy Military Contract Variations
World War I Navy Colt Model M.32 ACP serial number 256799 - From the beginning of production until WWI, there was only one significant military order for the Model M. It was a 200 gun shipment ranging in serial number from 227226 to 260924 on September 29, 1917 to the U.S. Navy Yard, Washington, DC.
This pistol was shipped on 1/25/43 in a shipment of 8 guns "to the transportation officer, Navy Yard, Washington, D.C. for the supply officer." It has the distinguishing characteristic of having a flaming bomb ordnance mark on the upper left flat of the trigger guard.
A later Model M Navy that was originally shipped to Rock Island Arsenal (RIA) and then transferred to the Navy.
