Designed for an average daily traffic of 65,000 vehicles, the road now carries between 110,000 and 120,000 vehicles daily and is often congested for 13 hours on weekdays.

Replacing the state Route 520 bridge across Lake Washington is a higher priority from a strictly safety standpoint than the Alaskan Way Viaduct, Gov. Christine Gregoire said yesterday.
Asked if that meant then that the 520 bridge was a higher priority to fix, Gregoire responded that one thing she and legislators are united on is "safety first." She said 520 is one of 100 bridges around the state with safety problems that should get the priority for transportation spending.
Aubrey Davis, chairman of the 520 executive committee, said that possibly a year could be saved by incorporating a preferred alternative into the draft environmental impact statement rather than waiting until later to choose a preferred alternative.
