The close relationship between music and dance is a unique feature of Ethiopian folk arts since there is no tradition of solo musical performances.
Ethiopian musical instruments are simple and primitive in terms of design, mainly consisting of stringed instruments, such as the Begana, Masinko and Kirrar, and wind instruments such as the Washint, Imbilta and Meleket.
The Washint is a kind of crude Indian Bansuri made of bamboo with four narrow apertures.

Ethiopia: Afropop Country -- East Africa
Though the country hosts 75 ethnic groups, the Amharic-speaking people from the central highlands around Addis Ababa have mostly dominated popular music.
Since ancient times, Amharic azmari musicians have recited oral histories accompanied by the krar (lyre), masenqo (one-string fiddle), and washint (flute).
In the '20s, the young Selassie brought in Armenian refugees from Jerusalem to form the Bodyguard Orchestra, and well into the '70s, similar military brass bands accompanied the nation's early recording artists--the poetic Tilahoun Gessesse, his successful protégé the "Hindi-styled" Neway Debebe, and the ultimate best seller, Mahmoud Ahmed.

Our Belief: Issue of Musical Instruments in Church   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-30)
There are chrches who would not allow masinko and washint with mezmur.
It is changing through time in many ways.Peopel who argue that masenko, begena washint and so on mentioned on Mezemure dawit 150 are the only instrument allowed don’t understand that the original bible is not written in Amharic for Ethiopian people only.
So i think the problem is not the instrument that is being used but the 'zema' itself.

Exile « I Was Just Thinking
Remembering the old days, looking through discolored memory, while you are surrounded by a strange culture, in strange land.
One of my all-time favorite singer, Gigi, chants about 'Balewashintu', in which she reminiscences about the 'Washint" player from her native Godjam.
Despite the fact she found herself in cosmopolitan New York, she demonstrates her affectionate and nostalgic feelings when she envisaged the musician playing his flute.

This branches out, once again, from the classic vintage material that's been the hallmark of the albums, and marks a collaboration between four European jazz musicians -- all with conservatory training -- and Ethiopian musicians, most of whom work with the National Theater or Circus Ethiopia.
It's the Ethiopian elements very much in the ascent here, with the Europeans doing a very good job of following, although they rarely seem to take the lead, letting the washint flute and messenqo fiddle push ahead.
However, the mix of cultures and instruments is a very fertile one, getting an angular, bluesy feel at time, reminiscent in parts of Captain Beefheart, especially on the opener, "Bati." But the shining star of the whole affair is singer Yezinna Negash, whose voice has a supremely moving quality that almost becomes luminous.
