The median income for a household in the county was $29,563, and the median income for a family was $35,598.

The town of Cheyenne in Roger Mills County is the location of the Battle of Washita River (also called Battle of the Washita; Washita Battlefield), where George Armstrong Custer’s 7th U.S. Cavalry attacked Black Kettle’s Cheyenne village on the Washita River on November 26, 1868.
During the 1970's Roger Mills County and the surrounding area would benefit from the natural gas and oil development in the Panhandle-Hugoton field, the largest-volume gas field in the United States, and the world’s largest known source of helium.
In the county, the population was spread out with 23.80% under the age of 18, 6.70% from 18 to 24, 24.70% from 25 to 44, 26.00% from 45 to 64, and 18.70% who were 65 years of age or older.

For the first time since the illegal removal of the county offices and records from Cloud Chief to the town of New Cordell are proper steps being taken to cause the same to be brought back to the site established by act of Congress, and the only lawful county seat of Washita County.

 Construction to Start Soon on Replacement For Washed-Out Washita County Bridge
County Commissioner James Gee said the bridge will be built on north/south County Road 238 to straddle the Washita River two miles west and nine miles south of Cowden.
The new structure will replace a steel-beam bridge supported on wood pilings which was built about 1973 from recycled materials but was destroyed by floodwaters approximately two years ago, Gee said.
Federal funds will finance 80 percent of the cost and the county will be responsible for the other 20 percent, ledgers reflect.
