Frank Lloyd Wright Bibliography   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
A volume of photographs, called 'the Sonderheft' (after the ongoing Wasmuth series on contemporary architecture, "Architecture of the Twentieth Century", of which it was a member) in Wright's letters, and sometimes called 'the little Wasmuth' by later commentators (as opposed to the large folios of the 'Wasmuth portfolio').
The 'Wasmuth portfolio' was a more expensive, smaller print run; in the original edition it consisted of a pair of volumes (two folios).
Since the first Wasmuth publication was originally printed in two volumes, and there are also two different Wasmuth publications, references to terms such as 'the two Wasmuth volumes' can therefore be quite confusing: it is often not clear whether this means the original two-volume 'Wasmuth portfolio', or the set of both Wasmuth publications.

But this remarkable book is much more than a portfolio of now-vanished buildings; within its pages are evocative thumbnail sketches of scores of Chicago personalities, from the world-famous (Abraham Lincoln, Theodore Dreiser, Clarence Darrow, Ben Hecht, Jane Addams, Cyrus McCormick, George Pullman, and Gustavus Swift, to name just a few) to the locally notorious.
Beginning with a portrait of Nickel's youth on Chicago's West Side in the 1930's to his army service as a paratrooper and photographer, it progresses with his studies at the Institute of Design in the 1950's and his attempts thereafter to save Chicago's buildings, especially those of Louis Sullivan.
Includes 70+ illustrations and a special portfolio of duotone photos, printed on fine paper, taken by Nickel during his lifetime.

Wright's portfolio, Ausgeführte Bauten und Entwürfe, von Frank Lloyd Wright, published in Berlin after he left the country, is according to historian Vincent Scully, "one of the three most influential architectural treatises of the twentieth century" (Studies and Execated Buildings 5).
The portfolio, drawings of Wright's work through 1909, established the Sullivan school as part of a movement of international modernism, introducing it to Europe for really the first time.
Part of the portfolio's success was its use of Mahony Griffin's distinctive drawing style–it was influenced by the sparse detail, continuous line, and skewed perspective and dramatic space of Japanese prints.
