 Tarantula Hawks - DesertUSA
Wasps in the genus Hemipepsis are also known as "tarantula hawks." The species are difficult to distinguish.
The wasp may drink the body fluids oozing from the spider’s wounds or from its mouth to replenish nutrients and water she used during the attack.
If the wasp succeeds in stinging a male tarantula on a mating hunt, she will excavate a burrow, drag the paralyzed spider inside, lay her single egg, and seal the chamber.

A wasp is any insect of the order Hymenoptera and suborder Apocrita that is not a bee or an ant.
With most species, adult parasitic wasps themselves do not take any nutrients from their prey, and, much like bees, butterflies, and moths, typically derive all of their nutrition from nectar (one species of braconid, Microplitis croceipes, has even been trained via nectar rewards to detect narcotics and explosives) [1].
Parasitic wasps are typically parasitoids, and extremely diverse in habits, many laying their eggs in inert stages of their host (egg or pupa), or sometimes paralyzing their prey by injecting it with venom through their ovipositor.

The culprit is the erythrina gall wasp, an insect not much bigger than a speck that lays its eggs in the leaves and stems of the various kinds of wiliwili – the elegant native Hawaiian trees as well as the non-native species that are often called tiger’s claw or coral trees.
The erythrina gall wasp was not even known until a year ago when it was described as a new species in Singapore and on two islands in the Indian Ocean east of Madagascar.
The gall wasp follows on the heels of fireweed, the hala scale, kahili ginger, Christmas berry, the coqui frog and miconia as major threats to the native Hawaiian landscape.

BBC NEWS | Science/Nature | Radio tags track wasp behaviour
To track the wasps, the team fitted the insects with Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tags and placed sensors at the entrance of each nest to record their movements, in real time, in and out of the nests.
After further observations, the ZSL team ruled out that the wasps were lost, confused by their tags or trying to lay eggs in their neighbours' nests in a bout of social parasitism.
Instead, it found the wasps were helping to raise their relatives' young.

Wasps and hornets don't generally lose their stingers anyways, unless they deliberately 'screw' the stinger in by rotating, in which case they die, from bleeding to death.
The symptoms you are describing are typical of a wasp sting, and the swelling and pain should be down considerably by Saturday night.
