	Railhistory
		The New York and Harlem Railroad originated in the 1840's as an early commuter railroad linking lower Manhattan (New York City) with the affluent new "suburb" of Harlem in northern Manhattan.
		Albany, NY was the terminus for both the Erie Canal and the newly constructed Buffalo to Albany New York Central Railroad.
		In 1968, the New York Central Railroad merged with its former archrival, the Pennsylvania Railroad, to form a mega-giant railroad, the Penn-Central Corporation.

		Amenia (population: 5,200, size: 43.4 square miles.) is a quaint Victorian town nestled in the foothills of the Berkshires, with superb views and scenic countryside.
		The Township of Amenia was organized in 1823, with the main population centers in the hamlets of the Oblong Valley and Smithfield.
		Wassaic grew up around the Gridley Iron Works and along the new Harlem division of the New York Central Railroad in the early 1800's.

		Wassaic loaded 7,468 tons of Army supplies and got underway for Bordeaux, France, on 10 November— the day before the armistice was signed, ending World War I. En route to Europe, Wassaic encountered mechanical difficulties and was obliged to put into New York on the 16th for repairs.
		There, after final repairs and inventories, Wassaic was decommissioned, struck from the Navy list, and returned to the Shipping Board, all on 29 May 1919.
		Wassaic remained in Shipping Board ownership until she was abandoned due to age and deterioration in 1931 or 1932.
