The Wasserkuppe (German: "water peak") is a high plateau (elevation 950 m or 3100 ft), the highest peak in the Rhön Mountains within the German state of Hessen.
The first competition had been organised by Oskar Ursinus, who also built the first clubhouse on the Wasserkuppe in 1924 to replace the shipping containers that enthusiasts were using as accommodation up to that point.
During the Third Reich, gliding activities became largely controlled by the state, and for Hitler Youth pilots and their instructors, proficiency in gliding was viewed as the first step towards the Luftwaffe.

Carl Oskar Ursinus (March 11, 1877 - July 6, 1952) was a pioneer of German aviation and is remembered mainly for his contributions to sailplane designs and the sport of gliding.
Ursinus was born in Weißenfels and attended Technical College in Mittweida.
A plateau particularly suited to gliding, the Wasserkuppe, became a focal point for this activity, and in 1920, Ursinus organised a competition there.

At almost 1000m elevation, it is the highest located school in the state of Hesse.
Besides the court yard and a place for a bonfire, there is a field, a green vollyballfield, a tennis and basketball field (both are tared) for your disposal.
Outside the fenced area there are the airplane hangars, the runway, the german airglider museum, a summer toboggan run, skilifts and cross-country ski-tracks in the wintertime and lots of room for activities in nature on the wide open hangs of the Wasserkuppe.

You may already have heard the sad news that Peter Riedel, the last survivor of the first gliding competition on the Wasserkuppe in 1920, died quietly in hospital at Ardmore, Oklahoma on 6th November.
He also won the Wasserkuppe contest and was awarded the Hindenburg Cup.
He was one of four outstanding pilots to accompany Georgii on a famous expedition to Latin America in 1934, when the sport of soaring was introduced to Brazil and Argentina.

'Wasserkuppe' is known best as the birthplace of motorless flying activities in the 1900s and a lot of these activities are still going on today - take part or just watch them, it is worth it!
Take a public bus (no. 26) three times a day for your 25 km ride to the "Wasserkuppe", the bus stops just minutes away from the hostel.

Here is a report of the Euroglide Competition, which is a 2000 Km race through Europe, held every two years and organised by the gliding club at Eindhoven, in the Netherlands.
This year, the distance was 2211Km, from Eindhoven, to Dahlemer Binz in Germany, across Belgium, to Romorantin, in France, then to Lachen Speyerdorf, Klippeneck, Cham Janahof, the Wasserkuppe and Oerlinghausen in Germany, finishing at Venlo in the Netherlands.
It would be a race against time, and if we couldn't make it we might end up being retrieved back to the Wasserkuppe.
