Sewage treatment - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The objective of the treatment is to produce both a clean wastestream (or treated effluent) suitable for discharge or reuse back into the environment, and a solid waste or sludge also suitable for proper disposal or reuse.
In older plants and plants receiving more variable loads, trickling filter beds are used where the settled sewage liquor is spread onto the surface of a deep bed made up of coke (carbonised coal), limestone chips or specially fabricated plastic media.
The purpose of disinfection in the treatment of wastewater is to substantially reduce the number of living organisms in the water to be discharged back into the environment.

 Martinsville's Wastewater Treatment Plant
Wastewater overflows the effluent weirs of the clarifiers and is transported to the secondary treatment process.
As the strength of the incoming wastewater increases, the oxygen demand of the activated sludge organisms increases, requiring more dissolved oxygen to be supplied by the aeration equipment and conversely, when the incoming organic concentration decreases, the oxygen demand of the organisms decreases.
Wastewater overflows the effluent weirs and is transported to the chlorine contact tanks for disinfection.

 Water/Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator Profile
Wastewater treatment plant operators remove harmful pollutants from domestic and industrial wastewater so that it is safe to return to the environment.
Wastewater travels through customers' sewer pipes to wastewater treatment plants where it is treated and returned to the streams, rivers and oceans, or reused for irrigation and landscaping.
Employment of water and wastewater treatment plant operators is expected to grow as fast as the average for all occupations through the year 2012.

 Lynn Wastewater Treatment Plant
Wastewater is the used water and solids from a community that flows to a treatment plant.
Treatment plants are not designed to remove all possible wastes from a wastewater flow.
The Lynn Regional Wastewater Treatment Facility is currently a primary and secondary treatment plant with a design purpose of the primary to remove Settleable and floatable material (sludge, grease, etc.).

City of Wichita - Sewage Treatment Wastewater Treatment Plant
A treatment plant accomplishes in a few hours what would take place over a period of days or weeks if the wastewater was discharged directly into the river, thus preserving the ecosystem of the river.
Treatment begins when the wastewater flows from the mainline sewer through a bar screen which prevents large pieces of material from clogging or damaging the plant equipment.
Wastewater which has received primary treatment at Plant #1 flows by gravity through a line 66 inches in diameter to Plant #2 for secondary treatment.

 Denmark Wastewater Treatment Plant
An issue for all wastewater treatment plants is the disposal of the biological sludge or biosolids, which are necessarily generated in the process of treating the wastewater.
The wastewater then flows into the DAT which is aerated and in which phosphorus is removed from the wastewater by those organisms that had taken up the short chain fatty acids in the anaerobic reactor.
This treatment plant will improve the environment of Denmark and its surrounding waters due to a much cleaner effluent being produced than in the past; the levels of organic carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus in the effluent are significantly lower than in the past.

A bypass pipe, installed at the treatment plant, is used to bypass partially treated wastewater around the secondary treatment system to handle these excessive flows.
Treatment plant operators typically activate the bypass when flows at the plant exceed 2.15 million gallons per day.
The purpose of this study was to identify hydraulic limitations within the existing treatment plant and determine actions necessary to increase the flow capacity of the plant.

 Waste Water Treatment Plant
The Wastewater Treatment Plant is a division of the Utilities Department, which provides wastewater pumping and treatment, effluent and receiving stream monitoring, management of treatment residuals, and industrial waste control for Springfield and some surrounding areas, which are tributary to the collection system.
The Springfield Wastewater treatment plant was originally constructed and placed into operation with preliminary and primary sewage treatment, and single stage anaerobic sludge digestion followed by a vacuum filter.
The preliminary treatment process was expanded and upgraded to dual units for screenings and aerated grit removal, and a chlorine contact basin and storage building for ton containers was added to improve the disinfection process.

City of Ashland, Oregon - Wastewater Treatment Plant
The City of Ashland's wastewater treatment plant operates as a secondary treatment system for five months (December 1-April 30), and as a tertiary system the remaining seven months (May 1- November 30).
The biological treatment operation of the oxidation ditch depends upon a population of organisms in the oxidation ditches which convert the organic material in the wastewater to new cells, and the subsequent settling and removal of the organisms in the secondary clarifiers.
The population of microorganisms, referred to as mixed liquor (ML), is maintained in the oxidation ditches and is responsible for the wastewater treatment and nutrient removal.

Hailey Wastewater Department: Hailey's Wastewater Treatment Plant   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-20)
Once in the plant, the wastewater passes through a self-cleaning, cylindrical fine screen that removes all the large pieces of debris like paper towels from the waste stream.
Once all the material that could cause problems in the plant by fouling pumps or plugging pipes is removed, the process moves on to treat the nutrients and organic matter in the wastewater.
At this point the wastewater is done with most of its treatment except for a final filter (tertiary treatment) to remove some of the very fine solids that won't settle and UV (ultraviolet) disinfection to kill any pathogens in the water.
