Uatu the Watcher - Marvel Universe: The definitive online source for Marvel super hero bios.
Billions of years ago, the technologically-advanced extraterrestrial race known as the Watchers decided it was their duty to help the universe's less advanced races.
Based on the Watcher Otmu's theory that even observation affected others, the "Oblivion Plague" caused many Watchers to end their existences; though perpetuated by Maelstrom, the Plague was ended when Quasar convinced the Watchers that they must continue to observe so they could pass on their accumulated recordings to the next universe.
Eventually reinstated into the Watchers, Uatu witnessed the temporary demise of Galactus, who was destroyed by an intergalactic alliance of heroes led by the Silver Surfer near the Shi'ar homeworld.

Watchers are telepathic, able to scan the mind of virtually every known form of sentient life and to project their thoughts into any brain.
Watchers are seemingly immortal (although degrees of maturity are evident), having bolstered the limits of their life forces with "delta-rays." Presumably an explosion that dispersed all of their bodily molecules thousands of miles would prove fatal.
The Watcher named Ikor, stated that it was their race's duty to help other races, although the Tribunal's leader, Emnu, argued that the Watchers owed nothing to races that he did not regard as their equals.

Watcher (comics) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Watchers were among the first intelligent species in the universe, developing a high level of technology millions or even billions of years before nearly all other species.
The Watchers, believing that their knowledge belongs to the universe, came to the planet Prosilicus, interfering in the evolutionary and technological development of a younger species.
Watchers also have the apparent ability to break the Fourth Wall; the Watchers typically hold discourse not with an unseen party, nor with themselves, but rather, they relate their stories directly to the readers of the Comic themselves.

However, the industry's self-censorship board, the Comics Code Authority, refused to approve the story because of the presence of narcotics, deeming the context of the story irrelevant.

When Galactus expresses his complete indifference to the race inhabiting the planet he is about to consume, refusing to be delayed further by the foolishness of his own creation, the Surfer vainly attempts to force the hand of Galactus, though his is completely outmatched from the beginning.
