WATCOM's compilers have generally lead in the performance category in all brands and versions of their compilers starting with version 7.x, however among the more modern compilers it appears as though both "djgpp" and "Visual C++ 4.x" produce pure C code compilation which is very competitive with WATCOM's.
WATCOM C/C++'s stack, by default is 16K, so declaring a local array in a function of more than 4096 ints, say, will cause a stack fault with no clear explanation about the error.
WATCOM has changed the meaning of "cdecl" recently, so how you deal with this may be different depending on the version of WATCOM C/C++ you are using.

Watcom C/C++ gained lot of popularity in mid-1990's as the compiler used for most games - major hits like DOOM or Warcraft II were built with Watcom.
Watcom 11.0c fixes several long-standing OS/2 issues from previous versions, such as the debugger crashing on startup on newer OS/2 kernels (not technically a bug in Watcom) or the linker incorrectly generating fixups for 16-bit API calls from 32-bit code.

This is good news on the one hand, because--like it or not--compilers in the PC realm are often judged more on the basis of their GUI development environments and less on the technical strength of their compiler cores.
Watcom's IDE (integrated development environment) and other graphical development t ools are so nice, however, that I quickly overcame my disk space anxieties.
In defense of Watcom 9.0, it wasn't a difficult arrangement to live with: When I was developing several 32-bit command-line-driven programs, I could create DOS extended, NT, or OS/2 versions by just executing the appropriate link batch file; recompilation was unnecessary.

 NOVELL: Generating NLMs without Watcom-C
While Watcom C/C++ provides a stable cross-platform development environment that by default includes NetWare Loadable Modules as a development target, there is still no reason to not consider using other compilers that are equally capable of generating 32-bit FLAT-model code.
Today's domination of NLM development by Watcom is primarily based on the fact that Watcom was a very early provider of a 32-bit compiler.
The CLib implementation uses Watcom's schema of passing a pointer to the structure, other compilers use other methods which are not compatible and will result in your NLM crashing or misbehaving.
