 CLASSICAL MUSIC ARCHIVES: Handel Biography
With Handel on the other hand, even religious oratorios such as the Messiah, have a theatrical quality that is not exclusively of the church and that communicates to an already burgeoning middle class audience.
This music was published in 1740 under the title "Water Music." Meanwhile, Handel settled down to a long and prosperous career in London where Italianate music had always found favor, becoming a naturalized citizen in 1726.
Handel, along with Bach, is one of the supreme glories of his age for many reasons, not the least of which is the sincerity and clarity of his emotional meaning.

To defuse the tension, 12,000 tickets were sold for a rehearsal of Handel's music, which ended with a 101 cannon salute and caused a massive traffic jam that blocked London Bridge for three hours.
The King at first wanted no music but compromised by decreeing only "martial instruments." Handel, too, bargained – for sufficient volume to be heard over the din he had wanted a hundred players, but settled for the then-colossal ensemble of 24 oboes, 12 bassoons, 9 horns, 9 trumpets and 3 kettledrums.
Handel had been appointed Kappelmeister to the German Hanover court, but his patron had become upset that the court composer was constantly absent on extended English stays.

Although the music is not really meant for dancing (they merely borrowed the form from the French), the dynamism and 'push' of the dance is a key ingredient of the music.
His instrumental music, good as they are, is only an indication of the wealth and worth of vocal music that has come from his pen; for Handel's magic is his ability to engage the public with his art.

 PBO - Handel's Water Music
The music for The Alchemist was first heard in London’s King Theatre, Haymarket, in January of 1710 and was published later that year by Walsh in London.
This setting represents Handel’s second of the Daphne legend (the story of the wood nymph pursued by a god and transformed into a laurel), and was the latest in a long line of musical-dramatic efforts by such composers as Peri, Gagliano and Schütz (Cavalli, Fox and Richard Strauss had a go at it later).
She performed Handel’s Messiah with the Orquesta Sinfonica Nacional in Mexico, Eurydice in Gluck’s Orfeo, the Bach B Minor Mass with Mostly Mozart at Lincoln Center, and Handel’s L’Allegro ed il pensoroso with Helicon Ensemble.

For a work as iconic as Handel's 'Water Music', there is a surprising amount that we do not know about it.
Tradition also divides the music into three suites, one in F with horns, one in D major with trumpets and a chamber suite in G major.
The printed sources indicate that by the 1720s a continuo instrument was envisaged, but surely Handel would not have been happy with the feeble tinkling that passes for continuo on parts of this recording.

The birth of Water Music is documented by a quote from the Daily Courant of July 19, 1717 which reported: "On Wednesday Evening at about 8, the King took Water at Whitehall in an open Barge.
Handel; which his Majesty liked so well, that he caused it to be plaid over three times going and returning." George I of Hanover was the King and when he took over the throne he brought along 'A flight of hungry Hanoverians, like so many famished vulture.' So wrote the Whig Minster James Stanhope.

George Frederick Handel’s Water Music Suite:
Handel was born in Germany, but spent large portions of his life in Italy as well as in London, where he composed these two suites, the Water Music Suite and Music for the Royal Fireworks (Grout 424).
The exact instrumentation Handel used in the suite is also a mystery, but the types of instruments used for its debut in 1717 are quite different than those used today, and I will compare various aspects of these such as the difference in appearance, timbre and the capabilities of these Baroque instruments.
Schwartz describes this momentous event as “not as English as it may seem, for Handel, the English kind and the horn were all from Germany.”  After their debut in Water Music, the horns had found a place in English orchestras, and every composer after Handel has used it in their compositions.

The Suite in F is concluded with two movements from the Suite in D which Handel re-arranged into F major.
As these are the only two movements that we possess in Handel's manuscript, it is good that we can hear them and they make a fitting conclusion to the otherwise rather open ended Suite in F. Care has also been taken with the sound of the group.

Heaven knows, Handel wrote a great deal of wonderful music, much of which is rarely recorded.
I mean, as if the Water Music on its own isn't a rather obvious choice, this CD partners it with Handel's other 'pop' hit, Music for the Royal Fireworks.
Here the New York Philharmonic provides a full, magisterial sound as befits music written (if you accept the more romantic version of the story) for a river party given by King George I. In fact, while this is a fairly newly released disc, the recording is far from new.
