Water rockets provide an authentic purpose for the learning of many physical and mathematical concepts, providing students, teachers and others with an interesting means of investigating the effects of the many variables able to be altered.
One problem with a water rocket is that the water (usually the major component of mass) lies towards the rear of the rocket, so the empty front of the rocket tends to be dragged around to the side (like throwing a dart backwards) as the rocket moves through the air.
To test a water rocket's stability (when empty), a swing-test may be performed, a string is attached to a point on the circumference closest to the CG (CG is in fact located in thin air inside the bottle), and the rocket swung around in circles (larger circles are better).

 Flight of a Water Rocket
Water rockets are among the simplest type of rocket that a student encounters.
The rocket is then mounted on a launch tube which is quite similar to that used by a compressed air rocket.
Air is pumped into the bottle rocket to pressurize the bottle and thrust is generated when the water is expelled from the rocket through the nozzle at the bottom.

You also have to close your eyes as you launch to avoid the initial jet of water from the rocket and so you miss the best part of the flight which is where the rocket accelerates to full speed.
Rockets have been reported to fly as high as 90 metres so if it is windy they may land a large distance from the launch pad.
To improve the stability of the rocket you must either increase the length of the cylindrical fin or move the fin further back (by increasing the length of the struts).

If your rocket design is intended to travel up the path of success through various competitions, you may encounter such a launcher in which case, you should mount the fins on the side of the 2 litre bottle - details later on.
Attaching them to the side of the rocket and using a swept back parallelogram shape, such that the edge stuck to the rocket is on the straight sides but the distal edge (the edge furthest away from the rocket) goes back as far as the launcher will take (ie, level with the flange).

 Software for Fun and Education
For the typical free flight rocket, the degree of stability inherent in its design is largely dependent on the relative position of the rocket's Center of Mass (CM) to its Center of Pressure (CP).
This usually requires that more of the rocket's mass is concentrated at the front end of the rocket, while the fins are positioned as far aft as possible to maximize their effectiveness as a stabilizing device.
A few of the primary factors that influence the degree of stability needed are, the severity of the wind gusts and turbulence in the air, the speed your rocket flies, and the shape and distribution of mass in the rocket nose, body, and fins.

A bottle rocket is a 2-liter (soda) bottle with compressed air and water released in an upward direction.
Timing of the rocket starts when the rocket leaves the launch pad, and stops when the first part of the rocket hits the ground, when the rocket disappears from the judges' sight, or when the rocket impacts or gets entangled in an object (e.g.

I thought that if I made a long skinny rocket this would move the center of gravity back behind the center of area because the fins are heavier than the rest of the rocket.
So when we used less water the rocket accelerated faster, so the center of gravity moved foward of the center of pressure and as a result the rocket came down nose first.
As the rocket lifts off the launch tube the flang on the T nozzle catches on the neck of the soda bottle.
