John the Evangelist is the parish church of Waterbeach, which is situated about 7 miles north of Cambridge, east of the A10 to Ely.
After the suppression of the Templars, Denny Abbey was taken over by the nuns of Waterbeach, who were living there by 1324.

A late expansion scheme airfield, RAF Station Waterbeach was built on farmland at Windfold, north of Waterbeach village and adjacent to the A10 trunk road five miles outside Cambridge.
Permanent buildings and the usual crescent of hangars facing the bombing circle were planned but the outbreak of war brought some modifications with only two Type J hangars erected on the technical site which lay on the south-east side.
Four Dakota squadrons were stationed at Waterbeach late in 1947, the last, which disbanded early in 1950 leaving No. 24 Squadron and its mixed bag of aircraft, which had moved in the previous year.

 The Wartime Memories Project - RAF Waterbeach
RAF Waterbeach, situated just north of Waterbeach village adjacent to the A10 trunk road five miles outside Cambridge, opened in March 1941, although building work was not complete, the first squadron to arrive was No. 99, which brought its Wellingtons from Newmarket.
The squadron remained at Waterbeach until the end of hostilities, for much of the time with three flights and a complement of over 30 aircraft.
The airfield remained in use with the RAF until the 1980s when the station was transferred to the Army.

The village of Waterbeach lies just to the northeast of Cambridge, and can now be reached by bike on the well-surfaced river towpath.
In the early evening during term the southern half of this route can become quite busy with the coaches of rowing crews cycling alongside, but it is an extremely pleasant short ride, and a good way of reaching the excellent Bridge pub just outside the village.
If you’re cycling in the evening, you will notice that up until this point you have seen either men’s or women’s crews on the water, as use of the river is tightly restricted to prevent overcrowding.

There were several reasons for this; it is not a bad little stroll, and, far more importantly, it is a walk that actually proved that I could walk.
I arrived at Waterbeach station after a very short drive - usually driving to the start of a walk takes me up to a couple of hours, but this morning it took me just twenty minutes.
Leave the station and at the road head eastwards along it (whether that is a left to right turn depends on which platform you started from).
